Sometimes you are unable to put into words things that happen. This is one of them.

The story of this deer starts way back in the summer. I knew this was the deer I wanted to put my focus on and with hundreds of pictures on only a portion of the farm it was going to be a challenge. I hung stands in safe spots before season, and once season started I started hanging more aggressive stands off of what my cameras showed me. This deer disappeared all of August, September, and the beginning of October which had me puzzled. He was so regular up to August that I wondered if EHD had got him. Then on October 9th he showed back up checking scrapes. I was all in on this deer from then on.
Fast forward to October 24th where I had probably the greatest hunt I’ve ever had in a tree. It was picture perfect like it was scripted out. I had this deer at 30 yards and hit him in the shoulder. I was devastated, as most hunters know this feeling. Exactly one week later he showed back up working scrapes. He was active on cameras until November 2nd then disappeared again.
November 6th-8th was some of the best hunting I’ve had in a long time. I just knew If he was around he’d show up. Then on November 8th at 4:30 pm I grunted to see if anything was close that I couldn’t see. 5 minutes later this deer appeared out of the ditch to my north and I immediately knew who it was. Right before he entered the woods I hit him with a couple more soft grunts and he headed directly towards me. He veered off at the last minute, and at 25 yards I made sure this shot was true with a heart shot. He ran 70 yards and piled up.

This is my dream every time. It’s not very often you get a second chance at a deer like this. It’s truly a blessing to do what I do, and even more humbling to chase these kind of deer on places they truly call home.
