///ACME 101: Seat height

We are firmly against using formulae and body measurements to establish a rider’s position on the bike; bike fit is far too personal for that. When we are setting a rider’s ideal seat height our focus is on maximizing pelvic stability while delivering power to the pedals rather than chasing joint angles. The ideal seat height is a function of the flexibility and muscular coordination of the rider, and the way they interact with their equipment and not just limb lengths. Once we have found the seat height which minimizes a riders pelvic movement, we dynamically measure knee and ankle joint angles to confirm if we are within the normative ranges (35° to 42°, typically) but once we have found those ‘quiet hips’, we never let joint angles drive the fit in a way that compromises them.
