Cape Fear Isshin-Ryu was formed in 2001 and through the power of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ we have continued to grow, starting an afterschool program in 2008. The purpose of Cape Fear Isshin-Ryu is to offer discipline by fostering mental and physical enhancement as well as encouraging character development. This is done by teaching Martial Arts, encouraging good behavior at our facility as well as at home and school, getting involved with each student. Studies have shown that children participating in a Martial arts program have significant improvements in discipline, self control, self confidence, self esteem, coordination, fitness, and attitude. Our program stresses non-aggression and respect for self and others, and your child will have fun and make new friends in the process.
Cape Fear Isshin-Ryu’s two head instructors are brothers Sensei Brent Holland (6th degree black belt Isshin-Ryu, 3rd degree black belt Kobudo) and Sensei Byron Holland (6th degree black belt Isshin-Ryu, 2nd degree black belt Kobudo). Combined they have over 40 years of martial arts training and are both licensed educators in the state of North Carolina. Sensei Brent teaches Drama at Laney High School and Sensei Byron is the Media Coordinator at Murrayville Elementary School.
Cape Fear Isshin-Ryu Afterschool Program provides a rich and secure learning environment that will help your child make the most of their afterschool hours. Our program combines supervised homework and study time with a organized games and a well balanced curriculum in the martial arts.
What do we teach? Isshinryu Karate is an Okinawan system of self-defense created by Grand Master Tatsuo Shimabuku. Our style focuses on a balance of hand and foot techniques with a heavy emphasis on self defense. Our goal is to give individual attention to every child's needs and we work hard to see that your child progresses in their martial arts training. Students will earn rank based on their dedication and ability to perform what they have learned. When a student earns a new rank, there is a very real sense of accomplishment and pride in what they have done. As with almost all martial arts schools, we emphasize self-control and an increase on social skills. We achieve this through karate training as well as the interaction of organized games.
