Message from the MGS President
Dear Midway Girls Softball Families,
For those who don't know me, my name is John Maichle. I have been a part of Midway Girls Softball for the past 19½ years—first as a parent, then as a travel coach, a member of the Board of Directors, and most recently as President of Midway Girls Softball for the past two years. Throughout my time with the league, I have had the opportunity to serve in several different roles.
With that being said, I will be stepping down and leaving the organization on July 31, 2026. However, I want everyone to know that the league is in good hands with our current Board of Directors members. There are still several positions that need to be filled to support the board and ensure the continued success of Midway Girls Softball.
I am pleased to announce that Dave Grimes has been elected President by the Board of Directors. Please also join me in welcoming our newest board members: Assistant Recreation Coordinator Brittany Edwards and Equipment Director Jimmy Doughten.
I would also like to extend my sincere gratitude to our current Board of Directors members for everything you have done and continue to do for Midway Girls Softball. Your dedication, hard work, and commitment to our players and families are greatly appreciated and are essential to the continued success of our league.
The Midway Girls Softball Board of Directors is made up entirely of volunteers. There is no pay—just the reward of watching young athletes learn, grow, and develop a love for the game of fastpitch softball.
We are currently seeking volunteers for the following roles:
• Webmaster – Manages registrations, sends league communications, and maintains league information.
• Field Director – Oversees field maintenance, grooming, repairs, and equipment.
• Concession Director – Orders supplies and manages concession stand operations.
• Fundraising and Events Committees – Help secure field banners, organize fundraisers, plan Opening Ceremonies, and bring new ideas to the league.
If you're reading this and thinking, "I can't help," I encourage you to reconsider. I never imagined I would become a coach—let alone a travel coach. I certainly never envisioned serving on the Board of Directors, much less ending my time here as league president. If you are interested in helping but aren't sure where you fit in, the current board members will gladly guide and support you.
I want to thank all of the recreational coaches, parents, and Board of Directors members for their commitment and dedication to the league and its players.
I would also like to recognize and thank several past board members who continued serving even after their children aged out of the league: Patty Sinkus, Tom Glass, Greg Shivery, Terry Casson, Randy Stephens, Michael French, Ryan Hick, and, last but certainly not least, Mike Berryman, who continues to serve as our Acting Field Director.
A special thank you goes to Jack Knoll for bringing my family to Midway and convincing me to become a travel coach after only two years as a league parent. Thank you to all the coaches I had the privilege of coaching alongside especially Marc Quirk.
I would also like to thank Jack Knoll, Bret Wilson, Jack King, Stan Mlynarski, Greg Shivery, Donna Glass, and Mike Berryman for returning after their children finished playing travel softball to mentor and guide new, inexperienced travel coaches. Your time, knowledge, and dedication were greatly appreciated.
A very special thank you to Paula Subda for serving as the Travel Bookkeeper and for continuing to support and assist me even after her daughters and husband were no longer involved with the league. Your dedication, guidance, and willingness to help behind the scenes were truly appreciated.
Thank you to all the coaches who helped develop my two daughters. Thank you to the parents who trusted me to coach your daughters.
Finally, thank you to my family and my employer for giving me the time and support to coach and serve the league over the past 19½ years.
Over the years, I have met countless people and families. Many of the parents, players, and coaches I have worked with have become lifelong friends and extended family. I hope that Midway Girls Softball provides the same meaningful experiences and lasting relationships for you and your families.
Thank you for the memories, your support, and your dedication to Midway Girls Softball.
While my time in an official role is ending, Midway Girls Softball will always hold a special place in my heart. Take care, stay safe, and enjoy watching your children play.
Sincerely,
John Maichle
