Ludicrous Speed Racing

Well that didn't go as planned. Survived the start and first restart after black flag all number 1. Black flag all number 2 restart, not so much. The leader spun going into turn 1 (contact from p2 car), causing cars to bunch up and Ken bumped the car in front of him. He was able to pass that car and keep going but damage to hood pins caused the hood to buckle once he got up to speed and visibility was zero. Looking out the driver's side window, he limped down the back straight hoping to make it to pit road. But, it got too sketchy so he made it to the break in the wall and pulled off. Watched the rest of the race from the sidelines. The pictures here don't do it justice since the turn workers smashed the hood back into place so Ken could drive it back to the pits after the race.

Such a bummer to end our time with the TA Cup team this way, but it's been a really good run. Thank you to Curt and Patty of Kallberg Racing for the great opportunity. Thanks to Pat McFall. the best crew chief around, and Jefferson Racing, the best crew around. A big thanks to my friends , and Dave Dunning, and my brother Dave Sutherland, for all of their help, and my family for all of their support. You guys are the best!

This is what happened in front of Ken on the restart. Thankfully, both drivers were ok.

A very quick recap as I'm ready to call it a day, parked in the Lowe's parking lot somewhere in Iowa.

Changed motors between practice and qual yesterday. Ken could tell right away during qual that motor was good. Power steering went out on lap 2. Had to start in the back for the race. Up 5 spots at start, worked his way up to P3 in his class and had a great battle with P2. Finally got around him and made it to the leader's bumper when a full course caution came out with 6 laps to go. Went green with 1 lap to go. P1, 2 and 3 went side by side thru turns 1 and 2. Two TA cars get together in front of Ken, wreck and slide off track. Ken in the marbles, and drives off track to avoid spinning. Lost another position and finished 4th. P2 had jumped the start and was penalized post-race so we moved up to P3. All in all disappointed. Ken had gotten alongside the leader on the restart and had a good chance of winning. Leader had used up his tires and had a bad vibration.

But, 2 race weekends in a row and car and driver are in one piece. We'll take it. Next up: Rose Cup!

(When I talk about positions here, I'm talking in- class, TA Cup cars. Ken finished P6 overall. )

Motor swap in the Kallberg Racing .photo #85 Dodge Challenger TA Cup car today. The motor was an earlier generation designed to run with a restrictor plate. New rules this year allow for an unrestricted engine, and we got all the power we could out of this one. The .racing crew went to work right after practice this morning doing the swap. New engine started 3 hours later. Impressive!
