When I first started lifting weights, there were no women.
The first strength training class I ever took was in 11th grade.
It was me… and the entire football team.
I remember the gym teacher pulling me aside and protectively telling me to be aware of who was watching while I used the adductor machine (the one where your legs are spread wide open).
As a 17-year-old girl, I was naïve.I didn’t yet understand why my Gym teacher felt like I needed protecting.
Why the boys in the room felt at ease and like they belonged without question and somehow I was the intruder.
I was determined to take up more space so I didn’t let it hold me back. But for a lot of women this experience is what keeps them out of the gym forever.
This is the reason the Ladies Lifting Club exists today.
I look around commercial gyms like Planet Fitness and I don’t see women who look like me. I barely see any women at all. It’s still heavily dominated by males. And while I’ve grown comfortable enough in my own lifting journey to take up space regardless of who is there, I know there’s still so many women who crave the opportunity to learn to lift heavy in an environment that feels safe and comfortable for them!
