Each year, hundreds of thousands of snow geese migrate through South Dakota during spring — creating one of the most impressive wildlife spectacles in the state.

Because snow goose populations have grown so large, special conservation seasons are used to help manage their numbers and protect fragile Arctic nesting habitat.
The 2026 South Dakota spring light goose conservation order runs from February 16 to May 15, 2026, statewide. Peak migration typically occurs from late March to early April, with prime hunting focus in the eastern Prairie Pothole Region and along the Missouri River.
