Not to be outshined by the work of his VP a few weeks back, Kurt Hamblin went out to to the Johns Hopkins Hostetter-Wagner Road Race with a score to settle. The collegiate D race started promptly at 8am with 23 miles to cover and 2,040 feet to climb. After hearing what the UMBC Boys did for halloween this year, 2000 feet of climbing does not sound very impressive, but with an average speed of 20.5 miles an hour, they were working.
In the first lap of the race Kurt strategically positioned himself so that when the break happened on the steep kick he was able to take off with 2 other guys. This trio took turns working with each other and sharing the load for the first, second, and third laps; but Hamblin had other plans. Upon arriving at the same steep kick which originally split the pack, he decided to take off on his own and see what would happen. By accurately reading how much pain his fellow racers were enduring he was able to launch a ONE MAN BREAK (a feat reserved only for the strongest and craziest of riders) for the rest of the race and secure a hands down, no contest, clean FIRST PLACE FINISH!
It has been a while since UMBC has placed first in an ACCC race, even longer since we have done it during a conference championship weekend, and I honestly donβt know if its ever been done before as a one man breakaway! Lesson to be learned? Never underestimate UMBC.
