Not to be outshined by the work of his VP a few weeks back, Kurt Hamblin went out to to the Johns Hopkins Hostetter-Wagner Road Race with a score to settle. The collegiate D race started promptly at 8am with 23 miles to cover and 2,040 feet to climb. After hearing what the UMBC Boys did for halloween this year, 2000 feet of climbing does not sound very impressive, but with an average speed of 20.5 miles an hour, they were working.
In the first lap of the race Kurt strategically positioned himself so that when the break happened on the steep kick he was able to take off with 2 other guys. This trio took turns working with each other and sharing the load for the first, second, and third laps; but Hamblin had other plans. Upon arriving at the same steep kick which originally split the pack, he decided to take off on his own and see what would happen. By accurately reading how much pain his fellow racers were enduring he was able to launch a ONE MAN BREAK (a feat reserved only for the strongest and craziest of riders) for the rest of the race and secure a hands down, no contest, clean FIRST PLACE FINISH!
It has been a while since UMBC has placed first in an ACCC race, even longer since we have done it during a conference championship weekend, and I honestly don’t know if its ever been done before as a one man breakaway! Lesson to be learned? Never underestimate UMBC.

Our lone retriever and VP, Mathew Cherian was greeted with a chilly morning at the United States Naval Academy criterium today. 28 degrees and light snow flurries set the stage for a rider who is indifferent to crits at best. At the start of the race Cherian felt strong taking pulls and fighting for the first few wheels but with 6 laps left to go, the race intensified and Cherian cracked due to slightly underestimating his competitors. He fell towards the back end of his pack but with his last few laps, pushed through and snatched a top 10 finish of 7th place. I bet a warm car and a hot cup of coffee have never felt better.

Our boys were greeted with the warmest of welcomes at the UVA Cavallier criterium today. The temperature hovered around the mid to lower 50's and a system of rain decided to move in to watch the races. With a wet, technical course, and a short race time, there was no lull to the action. From the start to the finish line it was full throttle, and with the weather conditions how they were, there were crashes in nearly every lap, with some of the same riders going down multiple times. Kurt Hamblin lost the two riders he was working with in the same corner just one lap after another forcing him to work by himself to chase down the liberty riders up ahead. Mathew Cherian, after witnessing a few of the crashes, decided to sit up and play it safe pulling some of the riders around him up the hills and take turns on the front of his group. At the end of the day Hamblin placed 6th and Cherian placed 25th although both riders believe that the results are not completely accurate and that they did better but due to a lack of a camera at the finish because of the rain the numbers got fudged. Regardless, a shower and some rest are well deserved!

Our President and Vice President were out today doing what they do best. Bringing the Pain! After an attack by Hamblin on the hill Hamblin and Cherian sat in first and second place respectively. Immediately after, a strong counter attack was executed by Virginia Tech and Liberty University. This pattern of attacking and counter attacking continued throughout the race. By the final lap the relentless attacks had divided the field, dropping the riders who couldn't hang on and splitting the pack. Kurt Hamblin Finished placing 5th out of 41 and Mathew Cherian placed 24th out 41 at the 13th annual Tidewater Winter Classics hosted by the College of William and Mary Cycling. Our boys will be back out racing the crit at UVA in the morning. Good luck fellas!

Not wanting to miss out on the spooky fun, on the morn of halloween Mathew Cherian completed 6 Illchester repeats, David Burgenson completed 6 repeats, and Kurt Hamblin did an additional 6 Illchester repeats. Thats more than THREE THOUSAND feet of climbing for each of these gentlemen. (666 possibly intentional)

Twas the night before halloween and two UMBC lads were out conquering their fears. Julian Paul and Kurt Hamblin completed 13 SPOOOOOKY repeats each of Illchester Road (average gradient of 18%). Thats over FIVE THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED feet of climbing each!! If that does't scare ya, I don't know what will.
