I stopped using cleansers that left my skin feeling "squeaky clean"...

Because somewhere along the way I realized that "squeaky clean" usually meant my skin was stripped, tight, and immediately begging for moisture.

Living in Arizona's high desert, mature skin doesn't need more harsh cleansing. It needs support.

So I've been experimenting with simple, nourishing formulas that cleanse while actually respecting the skin barrier.
And this cleansing balm has become one of my favorites.
It melts into the skin, dissolves makeup, sunscreen, dirt, and the day itself... without leaving my face feeling dry or depleted afterward.

Just soft. Comfortable. Balanced.
No harsh surfactants.
No long list of ingredients I can't pronounce.
Just natural oils and butters doing what they've done for generations.

Simple DIY Cleansing Balm for Mature Skin

Makes approximately 4 oz.

• 50 g raw unrefined shea butter
• 25 g jojoba oil
• 15 g argan oil
• 10 g rosehip seed oil
• 8 g castor oil
Optional:
Replace 20–25 g of the shea butter with grass-fed tallow for an extra-rich version that many people find incredibly nourishing for dry, mature skin.

How to Make It

Gently melt the shea butter (and tallow if using) over low heat.
Remove from heat and stir in the remaining oils.
Pour into a clean glass jar and allow to cool completely until set.

How to Use

Scoop out a small amount and warm it between your fingertips.
Massage onto dry skin for 1–2 minutes.
Take a moment to enjoy the ritual.
Add a little warm water and continue massaging.
Remove with a warm damp cloth or rinse thoroughly.
Follow with your favorite facial oil or serum.

Why These Ingredients?
Shea Butter — deeply moisturizing and protective.

Jojoba Oil — closely resembles our skin's natural oils and helps balance moisture.

Argan Oil — rich in antioxidants and nourishing fatty acids.

Rosehip Seed Oil — beloved for supporting mature skin and improving the appearance of uneven tone.

Castor Oil — helps dissolve makeup and impurities while leaving skin soft.

Summer Tip
If your home gets warm, store the balm in a cool cabinet or the refrigerator during the hottest months.

It will stay fresh for many months and feels especially refreshing when applied chilled.

Sometimes the best skincare isn't about adding more products. It's about choosing ingredients that work with your skin instead of fighting against it.

Would you try a cleansing balm like this?

And if you're an oil cleanser fan, what's your favorite ingredient to include?

Also my husband after I tell him what's wrong:

"Well, technically..."
Sir.
This was a rescue mission.
You turned it into a TED Talk.
Now I'm not just mad about the original issue. I'm mad about the PowerPoint presentation explaining why I shouldn't be mad about the original issue.

At this point, the safest thing you can do is bring snacks, apologize for things you don't even remember doing, and stop using the phrase "in my defense."

Ladies, be honest...
What's the most husband thing your husband has ever husbanded?

I'm glad this case is finally over.

The defendant admitted what he did.

Witnesses saw what happened.

The jury heard the evidence.

He had legal representation.

He had access to a defense fund that most defendants could only dream of having.

The case was tried in court, not in the court of public opinion.

And yet, what I still don't understand are the protests and the continued outrage over the verdict.

Why?

What exactly are people protesting?

The defendant wasn't denied a defense.

He wasn't railroaded through the system.

He wasn't prevented from presenting his case.

A jury listened to the evidence and reached a verdict.

That doesn't mean everyone has to agree with the outcome. People are absolutely entitled to their opinions.

Personally, I believe the sentence was too lenient.

If it were my child who had been killed, 17.5 years before parole eligibility would never feel like enough. Not even close.

A young man lost his entire future. His family received a lifetime of grief. No sentence can change that.

But that's exactly why I'm struggling to understand the demonstrations and the continued fundraising.

The defendant received a fair trial.

He had substantial financial support.

He had every opportunity to mount a vigorous defense.

The legal process worked the way it was designed to work.

So what is the goal now?

What are people hoping to accomplish through continued protests and donations after a conviction and sentence have already been handed down?

That's not a rhetorical question.

I'm genuinely asking.

Because from where I sit, the tragedy in this case is the life that was lost, and my heart remains with the family that will never get their son back.

Maybe I'm missing something.

Can someone explain what the ongoing protests are seeking to achieve and why people are still contributing money after the trial has concluded?

I'd like to hear respectful perspectives from all sides.

Keep it civil. Real families are living with the consequences of this tragedy every single day.

Sustainable homesteading win: growing fresh fodder mats to feed small animals and dramatically cut commercial feed costs.

Here at Whispering Wind Ranches, we’ve been leaning heavily into regenerative systems that support animal health while reducing dependence on bagged feed. One of the simplest, most effective tools we use is tray-grown sprouted grain fodder.

It takes ordinary whole grains and turns them into dense, living mats of greens and roots that chickens, guinea fowl, and small livestock absolutely go for.

Why it works:

Just 1 lb of dry grain can become 5–6+ lbs of fresh fodder. That alone can noticeably reduce feed costs over time.

Sprouting also improves digestibility and unlocks more nutrients—B vitamins, vitamin C, enzymes, and more bioavailable protein. You’re essentially turning stored grain into living feed.

It’s also scalable and low-waste. Minimal equipment, low input costs, and everything leftover composts easily back into the system. In dry climates like ours, it’s a practical way to bring in consistent fresh greens without relying on pasture.

How to grow fodder in trays (simple system):

You’ll need shallow trays with drainage holes, a basic rack or shelving system, and bulk untreated grains like barley or wheat.

Step 1: Soak
Cover grains with water and soak for 12–24 hours. Drain thoroughly.

Step 2: Tray
Spread grains in a thin, even layer (no more than about ½ inch deep). This is key for airflow and mold prevention.

Step 3: Grow
Place trays on racks and rinse or mist twice daily. In hot, dry climates, a bit of extra misting or shade helps.

Step 4: Harvest
In about 6–8 days, you’ll have a thick, liftable mat of roots and greens. Feed it whole—animals eat everything.

Step 5: Repeat
Start new trays every 1–2 days for a steady rotation.

A simple rotation system:

Barley for fast, reliable growth
Hard red wheat for energy and protein
Barley with a small amount of black oil sunflower seeds for added fats
Wheat or millet blends for variety

Starting trays on a staggered schedule keeps a constant supply moving while maintaining nutritional diversity for the flock.

Feeding notes:

Introduce gradually. Offer alongside grit, oyster shell, pasture, and normal feed. Chickens and guinea fowl take to it quickly, and rabbits do well with it as a supplement alongside hay.

The key in dry climates is airflow and drainage—no standing water, no heavy layers, no shortcuts.

This is one of those systems that quietly pays you back over and over. Less feed bought in, healthier animals, and a more self-sufficient cycle overall.

Start small. A few trays. A few days. Then scale as you see how your animals respond.

Have you tried fodder systems before? What grains have worked best for you?

🌿 The Ultimate DIY Anti-Aging Facial Oil for Dry, Mature Skin

One of the things I love most about herbalism and natural skincare is that you can create incredibly effective products using simple, plant-based ingredients.

Recently, I set out to formulate a facial oil that focused on three things:

✨ Deep hydration
✨ Skin barrier support
✨ Healthy aging

The result was a powerhouse blend of organic, non-GMO oils, each bringing its own unique benefits to the recipe.

🌿 The Recipe

- 5 tbsp Rice Bran Oil
- 4 tbsp Pumpkin Seed Oil
- 3 tbsp Pecan Oil
- 2 tbsp Avocado Oil
- 2 tbsp Olive Oil
- 3 tbsp Jojoba Oil
- 4 tbsp Rosehip Oil
- 3 tbsp Evening Primrose Oil
- 3 tbsp Papaya Seed Oil
- 3 tbsp Tamanu Oil
- 3 tbsp Meadowfoam Seed Oil
- 1 tbsp Bakuchi Oil
- 1 tbsp Carrot Seed Oil
- 1 tbsp Red Raspberry Seed Oil
- 1 tbsp Neem Oil
- 1½ tbsp Castor Oil
- 1 tbsp Grapeseed Oil
- 3 tbsp Camellia Oil
- 2 tbsp Plum Kernel Oil

🌿 Why These Oils?

🥑 Avocado Oil deeply nourishes dry skin and supports the skin barrier.

🌹 Rosehip Oil is rich in vitamins A and C and is often used to improve the appearance of fine lines and uneven skin tone.

🌿 Bakuchi Oil is known as nature's retinol and is prized for supporting skin renewal without the harshness often associated with traditional retinoids.

🎃 Pumpkin Seed Oil contains zinc, vitamin E, and essential fatty acids that help support skin elasticity.

🌸 Camellia Oil has been used for generations to soften and moisturize skin while providing antioxidant protection.

🍑 Plum Kernel Oil leaves skin feeling silky while delivering vitamins and antioxidants.

🌾 Rice Bran Oil provides ferulic acid and vitamin E to help defend against environmental stressors.

🌼 Evening Primrose Oil helps support moisture retention and skin suppleness.

🌳 Tamanu Oil is treasured for its skin-rejuvenating properties.

🌱 Meadowfoam Seed Oil helps lock in hydration and adds stability to the blend.

The remaining oils work together to provide a broad spectrum of fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamins, and phytonutrients that help nourish and protect the skin.

🧴 How to Make It

1️⃣ Sanitize all bottles, measuring tools, and mixing equipment.

2️⃣ Measure and combine all oils in a glass bowl or measuring pitcher.

3️⃣ Stir thoroughly until fully blended.

4️⃣ Pour into dark amber glass bottles.

5️⃣ Store in a cool, dark location.

💧 How to Use

Apply 4-6 drops to clean, slightly damp skin.

Massage gently into the face, neck, and décolletage using upward strokes.

For very dry skin, apply a second layer before bed as an overnight treatment.

🌿 A Quick Reminder

No oil can stop the aging process—and that's perfectly okay.

Healthy aging isn't about chasing youth.

It's about nourishing the skin, protecting its barrier, and supporting it with ingredients that have stood the test of time.

Sometimes the best skincare doesn't come from a laboratory.

Sometimes it comes from plants, patience, and a little bit of knowledge. 🌿✨

Have you ever made your own facial oil blend? If so, what's your favorite ingredient?
