Dads all tagged out for 2025. Planned on holding out for a bigger bull but the moment wrote the story for himš
Thursday I located this herd in a spot I hunted a lot the year prior. After calling at them in their bedroom nothing was willing to answer but they were there. Friday dad went after them late in the morning and caught the tail end of the herd as they went back to bed.
Sunday. We decided to team up to see what we could make it happen. Spotted the elk about 700 yards across the canyon in the unit right where I hoped. The play was simple, but fool proof. Circle way down below and come up on them with the wind in our face. Sneaking up the road, finally in the unit we came up where I expected them to be. I peaked up to see antler tips walking from left to right about 30 yards off the road. The communication between dad and I wasnāt perfect in that moment. He thought the elk were bumped and running to the right. So he sped up and popped around the corner to see this spike standing broadside around 20 yards. I see him draw on the bull with his head in a bush. He releases and I see the arrow go through the bush. My first thought was āoh no..ā I reached for an arrow but as I did the bull was spinning and blood spewed out of his throat. I didnāt worry about pulling an arrow anymore. The bull went maybe 30 yards amd fell over. Dad put a kudu through the heart to finish him off. Then came the fun part. Very grateful to be able to be there while dad filled his tag.
