Officially survived the worst weekend I’ve had in a long time.
Before lessons kick up tomorrow and I have to explain any of this in person, we’ve had a not so good week around here.
On Friday Ash had a torsion colic, which is a death sentence without surgery, and about half of the time is still a death sentence even with surgery with a 16 year old horse.
It kicked off around 2pm, I called the vet out immediately, and by 430 pm we had him on the trailer headed to the vet after we still could not keep him up after the initial farm visit + heavy pain meds.
We did all of the things we could do and ran all of the tests but by 445 it was clear his intestines were dying.
Dr Pruitt and his vet techs were kind and compassionate and took amazing care of him. He passed peacefully just before 530pm.
It was the fastest and most horrific colic I’ve witnessed in my almost 40 years of life, but thanks to modern medicine and a great veterinary team, he did not suffer for a minute longer than he had to.
I will miss his sweet nickers when I go out to feed every day and will extra miss all of the laughs we got out of a horse FINALLY putting princess in her place. He was the sweetest boy that loved his face scratches and did his absolute best to do anything that was ever asked of him. I could not have owned a better horse.
