🚨Speed training🚨

Auditory feedback can be such a useful tool. Growing up I loved karate, and other than sparing, popping paper during striking drills was my favorite. Keith Elkins, the dojo owner and instructor, always had a pile of used X-rays papers in a box, and we would take turns throwing punches and kicks through the paper. The faster and more solid we could strike, the louder that paper would pop. It sounded like a shotgun when you got it right, and I loved it. My Dad also had some little clapping-strike pads that we’d use around the house that employed the same feedback. My brothers and I beat the heck out of those things. 😂

Flash forward to today, and the same principles apply to the little golfers I’m teaching…. And there are so many benefits to speed training drills like this. Dynamic balance…sequential coordination…. Killer timely feedback…. Lots of good stuff.

1- Basic swoosh swings… in a basic golf posture. At this stage, all we’re worried about is the pitch of the swoosh. Lower is slower…. Higher’s a flyer. It doesn’t take them much time to nail down a good sequence once they key in on the auditory feedback. We also want that speed THROUGH impact… “out front” as Mach3 Speed Training calls it.

2. Impact bag blasts- now we’re in a solid golf posture, and we’re learning to transition that new speed into a really good foundational impact position. The bag is aligned at the tee, and if they create speed through the bag while matching up the sequence so that the hands and “clubhead” meet the impact zone together, the stick smacks flat and they get a booming “POP!” It is LOUD… ear ringing loud.

3. Tee Smacks- we’re off to a hitting mat with a rubber tee and no balls. We’re swinging driver now, and trying to reproduce our speed swings while smacking the tee as loudly as we can. We’re also focused on not allowing our arc to crash into turf.

4. Balls- time to transfer into balls and targets downrange. It’s incredible how much speed these kids can pick up in just a few station rotations.

They can bust em 💪🏻

A little less than 3 weeks until we hit the Forge’s 1st birthday. I have worked harder over the last year than at any other time in my life, and done it for less money than I’ve made in decades.

Has it almost killed me? Yup… both figuratively and literally(on more than one occasion). Despite the fatigue and stress, it has been unbelievably rewarding. Looking out on the range, I’m extremely proud of all the work that I’ve done. I’ve played architect, heavy machine operator, superintendent, range attendant, concrete guy… you name it, I did it…. And I’m exhausted. Despite all the pain and exhaustion, I’m most proud of the small community we’ve built here…. Golfers invested in themselves on every level… and we’re just getting started.

Thank you to my students for your support and dedication. Thank you to the parents that’ve entrusted me with their most precious blessings. And thank you to the real hero of this story, my wife, who despite her better judgements, trusted me to build something different in a golf market that’s pretty much non-existent. She has supported me in ways that most partners couldn’t imagine, taken on pretty much the full burden of our homestead, and has been the greatest blessing from God I could’ve ever imagined. You’re my rock baby!… and I love you more than you know.

I can’t wait to see where this adventure takes us next!!!!

Most golfers never get better because they get trapped in the Golf-Swing Hamster Wheel… always searching for a mechanical answer to their on-course woes, while the real answer to performance often lies in simple subtle changes and the ability to adapt to course demands on the fly.

Ironically, the more effective your ability to adapt in those small ways, the cleaner your mechanics typically become.

So how do we “get off the wheel”? Simple! A real training pathway… An all inclusive attack plan that hits 4 major areas of your game.

1. Private 1-1 instruction for education and technical development
2. Group training sessions with revolving curriculum/challenges for transfer practice and skill-development with simulated pressure
3. On-course testing with scoring constraints for the ultimate high pressure simulation and further skills assessment
4. Solo practice sessions for exploration of both technique and skills

If you’re in Chattanooga or around the TN/GA/AL lines and that sounds like a gameplan you’re interested in, I still have a few vacancies for full-time students. Our Men’s, Boys’ and Girls’ groups are all lots of fun, and each still has at least 2-3 spots available. This isn’t just another swing lesson, it’s a step toward MUCH better golf.

Hit me with a DM if you’d like to come check us out!
