Learning to fly a wingsuit might be easy for some but a lot harder for others. For those that will have to work at it, I offer this encouragement....it will get better with practice. The experienced jumpers can forget the struggle of the beginner. I reviewed my log book in an effort to be more in touch with this struggle. Most things in skydiving I have struggled with. Wingsuit flying was no different. I am sharing my early log to encourage those that might need some encouragement. Only a few can put on the suit and fly without work. But it is rewarding when it starts to come together. So hang in there. http://pyrodan.privatedata.com/skydive/wingsuit/linked/MyEarlyWSLog.pdf

The Wingsuit School is still operating even though Gordon Sellers is moving away from the Dallas area. Gordon has made arrangements with Skydive Spaceland Dallas to continue to have beginner style suits to rent and for First Flight Course training to be accomplished at Spaceland Dallas. Stephen Megison and Dan Thames will both be doing the First Flight course for those interested and qualified (200 jumps minimum and very current). Stephen and Dan can both be contacted via Facebook if you have any questions. Beginner wingsuits are also available for rent, by the jump or by the day, to help new birds gain the needed experience before moving up to an intermediate style wingsuit. Stephen Megison Dan Thames

Couple of great ladies need some help. You can get a whole lotta free gear. Dig deep my friends!

This is Part 2 of 2. This video shows the second flight of a student following debrief of flight 1 and correction for arm, leg and head/chest positions. The exit is clean and although he still roles he corrects again well. Once he establishes flight, this time he really takes off as the improved body position delivers drive and lift. The rocking experienced on the first jump is also gone as the improved body position has increased air flow over the surface of the entire wing.
Continued refinement of the flight body position to streamline the aerodynamics and maximize the lifting potential of the wing are next for this student. Flattening the arch to a slight de-arch. Moving the head position down, rolling the shoulders to cup the chest slightly and extending the legs further are all things to continue to refine. In addition he can continue to work on navigation skills, relearning the importance of visual cues in sporting his exit point and references to his flight path while defending to the opening point.

This is Part 1 of 2. This video shows a typical First flight for beginning wingsuit pilot. Notice that he is still arched and has fairly bent legs. also that he is holding his arms at a slight angle at the elbow - breaking the shape of the wing. His head and chest are quit high. This is not uncommon in a Formation )(Belly) Skydiver transitioning to the first wingsuit flight.
All in all the jump is good. The exit is clean and he recovers from a slight rotation without opening his wings. He clears the aircraft nicely with wings closed. Once in flight, his body position leads to a rocking motion - caused by a wing stall - but he preforms his practice pulls and navigates as planned. His pull is clean and without line twists at the planned altitude. He does need to keep his feet and knees together thought opening.

During debrief, correction to arm, leg and head/chest positions were emphasized and the following second jump highlight the improvement in his overall flight performance. Please watch the second video and compare.

This article is an attempt to collate some of what we know and have learned from testing both wingsuits and parachutes in recent years. This is what we think works best now, in 2016, and it may contradict some older stuff written by pudgy ponytail clowns.
