The Whippets capped their 2025 campaign on a high note Friday evening at the WIAA Sectional Meet in Cambridge. In what many would consider perfect fall racing conditions — 52 degrees, sunny, calm, and on a fast, runner-friendly course — the team delivered its best collective effort of the season. The rolling, wooded trails of Cam Rock Park produced season-bests for many and lifetime bests for others.

Boys Recap
Freshman Tyler Carollo once again led the Whippets, finishing 42nd in 17:57 in his first postseason race. The pack of the team’s 2–5 runners ran together deep into the race. Wyatt Esch emerged as the No. 2 runner, placing 76th in 19:12. Seniors Quinton O’Toole and Isaiah went head-to-head one final time, crossing nearly together — Quinton 82nd in 19:33.1 and Isaiah 83rd in 19:33.8. Marcus Roselle battled to 85th in 19:35.

Sam Nickelsburg turned in the race of his life with a 94th-place finish in 21:31. Angel Kilar rounded out the lineup in 95th with a time of 21:49. The boys placed 14th overall.

Girls Recap
As she has all season, Virginia led the girls squad and matched Tyler’s team placing — 42nd — finishing in 21:17. Melody, racing in spikes for the first time, dropping a significant chunk of time to place 66th in 22:13. Ema Aranda surged late, passing numerous runners en route to 68th in 22:19. Senior Delaney Hammack ran strong and steady to finish 75th in 22:49.

Running together for much of the race, Peyton Comfort placed 88th in 24:28, senior Payton Brautigam closed her career with a lifetime PR of 24:38 for 90th, and Madelyn Taylor, filling in as the alternate, finished 91st in 24:53. The girls placed 13th out of 15 teams.

With no athletes advancing to the WIAA State Meet, the sectional meet concludes the season for the Whippets.

The Whitewater Whippets cross country teams toed the line at the Rock Valley Conference Championships on Thursday, turning in several standout performances on a notoriously difficult course at UW-Whitewater.

Led by freshman Tyler Carollo, the boys team placed 10th overall in the conference and fifth in the Valley Division. Carollo earned Second Team All-Conference honors, finishing 14th overall with a time of 18:50. The freshman showed exceptional composure and grit, racing his way into the top 16 to secure all-conference recognition in his first varsity season.

Marcus Roselle delivered his strongest race of the year, running a lifetime personal best of 20:26 to finish 52nd overall. Wyatt Esch followed close behind in 20:32 for 55th place, while Isaiah Mendez clocked 20:47 for 60th, just 13 seconds shy of his all-time best. Quinton O’Toole rounded out the top five in 21:47, placing 67th.

Also competing for the varsity squad were Angel Kilar (72nd, 22:44) and Carson Miller, who capped off his season with a personal best of 23:39 to finish 74th.

In the junior varsity race, Sam Nickelsburg led the Whippets with a career-best 23:25, good for 35th overall. All four JV runners recorded lifetime bests, including Jameson Rothwell (24:07), Ian Agen (26:22), and Steinar Truesdale (30:29), who completed his first race of the season after battling injuries.

On the girls' side, Virginia Nelson led the way once again, earning Honorable Mention All-Conference honors with a 19th-place finish in 22:56, improving on her 22nd-place finish from last year.

Freshman Melody Smith had a breakthrough performance, taking nearly a minute off her previous best to finish 34th in 24:35. Ema Aranda (35th, 24:36) and Delaney Hammack (40th, 24:54) weren’t far behind, providing steady depth for the Whippets.

Payton Brautigam and Noelia Villegas-Korbel crossed the line nearly together, with Brautigam edging ahead for 57th in 28:19 and Villegas-Korbel following in 28:20. Madelyn Taylor rounded out the varsity lineup in 28:47 for 61st.

The girls' team placed sixth overall out of 11 schools, finishing third in the Valley Division.

In JV action, Peyton Comfort highlighted the day with a massive personal best of 27:00 to take 14th. Kelly Mayorga finished 23rd in 32:31.

Head coach Chad Carstens praised the team’s effort and progress over the season, saying,

“We’re really proud of how our athletes competed today. It’s always rewarding to see so many lifetime bests and strong finishes at the conference meet. Tyler and Virginia led with outstanding races, but what stood out most was how much grit not only Tyler and Virginia have, but the team as a whole. Competing in cross country is not easy, and they rose to the challenge and gave it their all.”

Whippets Compete Under the Lights at Nightfall Classic

The Whitewater boys’ and girls’ cross country teams raced under the Friday night lights at the Nightfall Classic in Green Lake, an event known for its unique atmosphere and large, competitive field. With strong Division 2 schools from across the state toeing the line, the meet provided both stiff competition and memorable racing opportunities.

Boys Varsity
Whitewater placed 11th overall with 281 points, led by freshman
Tyler Carollo, who crossed the line in 18:58.9 for 31st place. He was followed by Wyatt Esch (55th, 20:09.9), Quinton O’Toole (63rd, 20:27.6), Marcus Roselle (65th, 20:34.2), and Isaiah Mendez (67th, 20:36.9) to complete the scoring five. Depth came from Angel Kilar (77th, 22:11.0), Carson Miller (87th, 23:54.5), Sam Nickelsburg (88th, 23:58.1), and Jameson Rothwell (131st, 25:07.0).

Head coach Chad Carstens was pleased with his team’s effort in the electric environment. “It’s always fun to run under the lights, and the kids really fed off the atmosphere tonight,” Carstens said. “Tyler continues to impress as a freshman, and our pack is showing signs of tightening up, which will be critical heading into the conference meet.”

Girls Varsity
Whitewater finished 12th with 307 points, led by sophomore Virginia Nelson, who ran a composed race to place 35th in 22:25.6. Teammate Delaney Hammack followed in 56th (24:05.9), with Ema Aranda (62nd, 24:24.8), Melody Smith (74th, 25:38.2), and Payton Brautigam (80th, 27:18.7) rounding out the scoring. Additional depth came from Noelia Villegas-Korbel (81st, 27:31.2) and Madelyn Taylor (82nd, 27:32.1).

Carstens highlighted the girls’ steady development. “Virginia set the tone for us again, and it was great to see Melody getting back to form after missing some meets due to injury,” he said.

The Nightfall Classic served as a valuable tune-up for Whitewater as they approach the postseason. With the Rock Valley Conference Championships on the 16th, the Whippets are focused on being the best they can be in the championship phase of their season.

The Whitewater Whippets cross country teams tested themselves against elite competition at the Midwest Invitational in Janesville, where more than 50 schools lined up in one of the largest and most competitive events of the season.

On the boys’ side, several runners posted lifetime personal bests despite the warm conditions. Tyler Carollo led the way with a 30-second improvement, clocking 18:22. Wyatt Esch tied his career mark in 19:54, while Marcus Roselle shaved seven seconds for a 20:30 finish. Returning from injury, Carson Miller impressed with a 71-second drop at 24:34, and Ian Agen highlighted the day by cutting nearly two minutes to finish in 28:04. The boys’ team placed 53rd overall.

For the girls, Virginia Nelson matched her freshman-year best with a 22:14 finish. Ema Aranda ran a season-best 24:23, and Kelly Mayorga showed major progress by dropping more than two minutes, running 31:50.

The Whippets will conclude the regular season Friday, October 3, at the Nightfall Classic in Green Lake, a unique evening meet run entirely under the lights.
