Basham Baseball & Softball Training

Basham Baseball & Softball Training I help hitters produce at gametime. 🕖
- 2x D1 (Power 5) Team MVP
- Indy Ball (pro) R.O.Y. & All-Star I went on to play 3 years at Michigan State University.

I have a passion for working with hitters and helping them improve their game. My baseball background begins with my time at Lowell High School (Lowell, IN). I was a 3-time All-State selection at Lowell, and finished my prep career among the top 5 all-time in the state of Indiana for career batting average. As a 2-time All-Big Ten selection, I was then drafted by Toronto Blue Jays in the 29th roun

d in 2006. After an injury kept me from playing in the Blue Jays organization, I played 5 years of independent professional baseball, spending time with the Florence Freedom (Florence, KY),the Joliet Jackhammers (Joliet, IL), and the Windy City Thunderbolts (Crestwood, IL). During my professional career, I was named the 2007 Frontier League Rookie of the Year and 2009 Frontier League All-Star Game MVP. My career stats include a .285 batting average, 453 hits, 50 home runs, and 102 doubles. My coaching career began with my time as an assistant coach at Hanover Central High School (Cedar Lake, IN) both in 2008 and 2009. I then spent 2011 and 2012 as the hitting and outfield coach for Robert Morris University – Chicago. In 2011, the Eagles won a conference title, finished 2nd in the CCAC in team batting average and home runs, and 1st in RBI. In 2012, the Eagles once again finished 2nd in batting average and home runs and 2nd in RBI in their conference. I have given private instruction for 6 years. In 2012 and 2013, I was able to work along side former Major Leaguer John Cangelosi at the Bo Jackson Elite Sports Dome in Lockport, IL. I am currently the head coach of the Indiana Mustangs 15U team. If you are interested in lessons, please call me at 219.545.1364 or email me at [email protected]

STOP guessing with your timing. 🛑

If you aren't visualizing your point of contact before the pitcher releases the ball, your timing will always be inconsistent.

Timing = timing the ball to a spot. Keep that spot in your mind's eye on every single pitch and see the difference. 📈

Save this for your next game day reminder! 💾

ATTENTION SWING PERFECTIONISTS 👀

If you smoked a line drive, you probably did something right.

Too many hitters are ruining their confidence by obsessing over every tiny movement instead of learning how to compete.

Paralysis by analysis is real.
Never let mechanics matter more than results.

I’m running the Hitting Mentorship Program again this season for high school baseball & softball hitters (April–July).

This is an in-season, fully remote program designed to help players learn how to make adjustments during the season, not just work on mechanics.

Throughout the season, hitters:
• submit at-bats from games for feedback
• meet twice per month for mentorship sessions
• work on their approach, confidence, and in-game adjustments
• stay accountable with ongoing support

One of the biggest differences with this program is that players are learning directly from their game at-bats while the season is happening, not just in the cage.

Cristian went through the program the past two seasons and explains how it helped him:

Varsity starter with a significant jump in extra-base hits.

If you’re a high school hitter or parent and want more info, send me a message.

Feel free to share this with a high school hitter who could benefit.

⚡️ One tiny cue instantly shortened his time to contact.

We noticed on film that his hand path was getting long — the barrel wasn’t turning over until the ball was already dropping.
So we gave him one simple thought: “Turn the k**b over and keep your hands higher.”

The difference? Immediate.
Shorter path ➝ Faster to the ball ➝ Cleaner contact.

This is why hitters need both feedback AND feel. You see it… then you fix it.
🎥 Drop drill is pure truth.

You don’t push the barrel to the ball — you turn it there.

Hitters who push their hands end up dragging the barrel.
No matter how hard they try, the barrel gets to the ball late… and they end up pushing or slicing balls to the opposite field.

The goal is to turn the barrel — from behind your body to in front of it — using the core and hands together.

In this drill, I show how easily the barrel can move when it’s turned correctly.
What does this get you? 👉 Consistent hard contact & pull-side power with minimal effort. 💥

Stop spinning your tires at the plate! The feel drill shown here can help because:
The spine is the engine.
The core is the primer.
The feet are the tires that grip the road.

If I spin out early, it’s like hitting the gas on icy blacktop… 🔄
No traction. No power. Immediate disconnection.

For hitters who get “spinny” with their back foot, the fix isn’t pushing harder—
👉 it’s learning to let the core lead the move, not the foot.

❌ Always feel like you’re out in front?
Here’s the truth—being “early” isn’t always about your timing.

Hitters who constantly feel out in front usually have an underlying issue. Sometimes it’s mechanics, sometimes it’s approach… but in this case, it came down to how my client uses his lower half.

👉 When you lose posture and your head drifts forward out over your front leg, you shrink your hitting window. Now you’ve got to be perfectly on time with the pitch—which is one of the hardest things to do in hitting. Even being off by a fraction leads to rollovers, pop-ups, or flat-out misses.

But… when you stay stacked and strong over your back leg—using your glutes and hamstrings to fire the backside—things change. Your head stays centered, your posture holds, and suddenly your timing window is much larger.

Now you can catch the ball way out front and still drive it. You don’t have to be perfect with your timing to feel strong and connected.

This is exactly what makes a hitter like Fernando Tatis Jr. so dangerous… he can be fooled and still do damage. Imagine how frustrating that is for pitchers! 😉

👉 Follow for more breakdowns and adjustments that make a real difference in the box.
