The recent three-year series of all star games between Door County League Baseball and Shoreland League now sits in favor of the boys from the peninsula. The leagues traded wins in 2022 and 2023 but the DCL took home a 5-4 victory Thursday night at Joannes Stadium in Green Bay.
Both teams went three up and three down in the first inning before the bats woke up. Door County, the visiting team on the scoreboard, started the second inning with a single and a walk before a double brought in both runners to take the lead 2-0. The Shoreland League started their half of the inning with a walk by Owen DePrez and a single by Hayden Konkol but back-to-back ground balls forced runners out at third base and no one would touch home despite six batters coming to the plate.
Door County would start the third inning with a single but the runner would be erased on a double play, the first of three turned in the game by the Shoreland defense. A one-out double by Noah Lindsley in the bottom of the inning put a runner in scoring position and, after advancing on a ground out, he would score on an error to make the score 2-1.
Door County started off the fourth inning with a walk that was driven in two batters later by a single to extend the lead to two. In the fifth, the DCL led off with back to back singles. Both runners would score via a ground out and another single to put Door County up 5-1. The Shoreland would respond in the bottom half of the inning with a walk by Brayden Skenadore who then stole second base. Skenadore would be driven in by an August Hecker single to cut into the lead.
The sixth inning saw the Shoreland mount a comeback. Wyatt Kruse drew a walk, Bradey C***s singled and both were driven in with a single by Trevor Cornell to cut the lead to one. Casey Stanzel followed with a double but he was left on base.
Door County batters were held scoreless the last four innings of the game but their best chance to score was upended by a great throw from right fielder Jaden Dillar to cut down a runner at the plate in the eighth inning.Down 5-4, the Shoreland had runners on second and third base with two outs in the bottom of the ninth but a slick play by the DCL shortstop on a weak ground ball ended the rally and the game.
