I thought I was gonna get super lucky last week when I saw this drag mark. I actually used my brain for once and decided to see what kind of cat killed this deer, turns out it was a bobcat. There was enough slush-snow to verify the crime scene and no question about it a bobcat killed this small deer and cached it. The one thing I found interesting was the bobcat either did not have time OR did not have the ability to gut the deer as a lion would. This is not uncommon just rare to see.

Last week I woke up feeling like I needed a day off from the long eared dogs and thought I’d go look for moose sheds. To be honest I didn’t expect to find any given the lack of winter I went to the highest elevation with snow around hoping to find a moose track in the ice after about 4 or 5 miles of no fresh sign we found a set laying right by where we started. The dog didn’t help she walked right over one horn and started digging out the other. Good thing they weren’t snakes or we both would have been bit. I guess at least we got one set gathered up.

When ya start a track on snow in nasty downfall and tree 12 miles later on dry ground. This was a very good quality Tom after we hiked in miles through nasty lodgepole as we caught our breath at the only tree in a giant rock pile the lion simply jumped into a rock crevasse and left the area in peace.

This was one of the rare times the dogs find the track for you. I only “rig” 2 or 3 lions a year. I drove down a road and turned around on the way back the dogs exploded obviously the cat crossed behind me. We had to wait 3 hours for daylight, there was enough snow in a few spots to verify it was a lion and not a bear. The cat must have decided to get out of dodge because it ended up being 7 miles of dog work before we treed the cat.

Late December we turned loose on a lion going into no man’s land the race turned back towards us which was a bonus. The downed lodgepole is always a challenge, but the lion found a place to settle down.
