Here’s a practical feeding plan for a weakened colony during a Montana drought. It’s designed to support brood rearing and overall colony strength when forage is scarce.
Carbohydrates (sugar syrup)
- Start with a 1:1 sugar syrup (equal parts sugar and water) for hydration and quick energy.
- Amount: about 2–3 gallons of syrup per week for a typical weak colony actively rearing brood. If brood levels are higher or the colony is very weak, you can increase to 3–4 gallons per week, split into two feedings.
- Feeding method: feed in accessible “honey supers” or a top feeder, ensuring bees can access the syrup without drowning. Keep the feeder area clean to reduce robbing.
- When to Switch: As you see improved brood viability and foraging resumes slowly, you can taper syrup and shift toward more natural forage as it becomes available. If nectar flow remains extremely limited, you may continue at 1:1 at a modest level.
Proteins (pollen substitute or patties)
- Purpose: supports brood development when natural pollen is scarce.
- Amount: place 1–2 patties of 15% protein per week if the colony has active brood. A common patty size is 4–8 oz; start with 1–2 patties per week per colony, then adjust based on how quickly they’re consumed.
- Placement: place patties directly on the brood nest or in a location clearly accessible to nurse bees. Check every 3–5 days and replace as needed to prevent mold.
- Alternative: if you don’t use patties, you can place pollen substitute in a shallow feeder or crumble it into the brood area to ensure even distribution.
Environment and management notes
- Water: ensure a reliable water source near the hive for cooling and drinking.
- Space: if colonies are crowded, consider opening more space or reducing supered frames to concentrate brood and resources where bees can defend them.
