Our industry has had a bit more of an old school mentality that has made people think injecting horses at young ages will cause long term problemsโ€ฆ.

Injecting younger horses (most commonly with joint support therapies better known as regenerative therapies such as PRP, Renovo, etc. not steroids) is intended to protect joint cartilage early, reduce inflammation before damage accumulates, and slow the progression of osteoarthritis (OA) over time. The key idea is prevention and preservation, not masking pain.

Read that again

Hereโ€™s how it injecting a horse helpsโ€ฆ not hinders!

1. Stops the inflammationโ€“damage cycle early

Even young performance horses experience:
โ€ข Micro-trauma from training
โ€ข Repetitive concussion
โ€ข Early, subclinical joint inflammation

If unchecked, inflammation releases enzymes that:
โ€ข Break down cartilage
โ€ข Thin joint fluid
โ€ข Damage bone under cartilage

Early injections interrupt this cycle before permanent changes occur.

2. Preserves cartilage while itโ€™s still healthy

Cartilage does not regenerate well once damaged.

Supportive joint injections can:
โ€ข Improve cartilage nutrition
โ€ข Reduce inflammatory mediators
โ€ข Protect chondrocytes (cartilage cells)

By treating early, you are preserving whatโ€™s there, not trying to fix whatโ€™s already lost.

3. Improves joint lubrication and shock absorption

Products like hyaluronic acid (HA) and polyacrylamide gel (PAAG):
โ€ข Improve synovial fluid quality
โ€ข Reduce friction
โ€ข Distribute load more evenly

Less friction = less wear over time.

4. Reduces the need for stronger drugs later

Strategic early management may:
โ€ข Decrease future reliance on repeated corticosteroids
โ€ข Reduce cumulative joint damage
โ€ข Prolong soundness and competitive longevity

Think of it like routine dental cleanings vs. root canals later on.

5. Supports proper movement patterns

Subtle joint discomfortโ€”even when not obviousโ€”can cause:
โ€ข Compensation
โ€ข Uneven loading
โ€ข Secondary joint strain

Maintaining comfortable joints early promotes correct biomechanics, preventing overload of other joints. Ultimately making sure your young or even aged horses create good habits!

Your trainers will thank you, and so will your horse! And you will likely accomplish a lot more faster when they feel GOOD!

Now this does not mean to inject just to inject, a lameness exam needs to be done to first diagnose areas that need addressed. And then the diagnosis can be made!

Well it looks like winter has officially settled in, I guess itโ€™s time to reflect on this yearโ€™s set of horses.

Every year I say itโ€ฆ these horses just keep getting better and better. I think a lot of factors play into why this is.
The things that come to mind are the owners and their actions. You guys are breeding with a lot of goals in mind, feeding right, vetting regularly(floating teeth, injctions when needed, etc.), and keeping on a consistent farrier schedule. These c**ts are properly handled, well-fed, and ready to be started, finished, and seasoned.
Another improvement Iโ€™ve noticed is the willingness to address ulcer prone horses. We are taking these horses out of their comfort zones, asking them to train hard, and putting pressure on them. Keeping track of their gut is so important. And yes itโ€™s expensive. There are lots of options in this department for maintenance. Of course treating is still the same. Iโ€™ve had a lot of luck with Esomeprozole to treat. Results start within a few days. Sucralfate has also been a huge help and provides a lot of comfort.
Thank you everyone for the great year! I look forward to my time with the horses already signed up for 2026. Once again, Iโ€™m not asking for a deposit as everyone has been fair with me in that department.
Do plan ahead though and get your horses on the books for 2026, Iโ€™ve had to turn down a lot of horses this summer that I would have loved to take because I was full.
At this time I have 2 spots open for July and August for 2026. Long term horses (2 + months over multiple years) will take preference.
Here are a few pictures of a handful of horses this summerโ€ฆ and the conditions they have to pay attention in. Banner, Fred, the dogs, and Cubby love to watch me work horses while standing in the dirt patch. And the cows stand on the other side of the fence and watch as well.
Thanks for another great year and Happy Thanksgiving everyone! ๐Ÿ™
