Some of my best memories don’t come from a trophy on the wall, but from quiet mornings in the woods with a young hunter by my side. Watching their eyes light up at the sound of a turkey gobble or the sight of a deer stepping out of the brush reminds me why I fell in love with the outdoors in the first place.

Hunting has always been about more than the harvest. It’s about patience, respect, and the responsibility that comes with being a steward of the land. When we share this with the next generation, we’re not just teaching them how to hunt—we’re teaching them to value conservation, to understand where their food comes from, and to appreciate the beauty of the natural world.

The truth is, youth hunting isn’t just about kids. It’s about all of us. It’s about ensuring our traditions live on, that the woods and waters remain healthy, and that the passion we carry for the outdoors has a future.

The excitement is building, but before we head out, it’s always worth slowing down to prep — and to think safety first. Here are 5 things to consider before opening day:

1️⃣ Walk the land — check trails, rubs, and bedding areas. Also look for hazards like downed trees or tricky terrain.
2️⃣ Go through your gear — clean your rifle or bow, replace old batteries, and make sure your safety harness and blaze orange are ready to go.
3️⃣ Know the rules — double-check Michigan DNR regs for your zone so you stay legal and safe.

Pulled trusty Dusty out of retirement last night.
June has simply put not been doing well this season, and Franklin is out with some back leg issues (vet appointment next week)

This deer had some significant injuries (my guess is a car). The front foot was busted almost clean off and it appears the skull was fractured with its antler hanging downward broken below the pedicle.
Dusty did his thing perfectly!

Tracker Danielle here. Congratulations to Ellory on this beautiful buck! At one point we had blood leading up to some crashing in the woods so Ellory and her boyfriend Marc ran back to the house to grab her bow. Khaleesi pushed on a little farther and found the deer already expired. Tracker Nate was waiting for us! Those smiles say it all!! What a night!
