Spring gobblers are probably on everyone’s mind… or maybe that’s just me. 😅 Either way, we’ve got a ton of exciting new features coming to the TRAKR app, and I sat down with Lindsey Knudson to break it all down. Give it a listen. 🎧

This hunter is a good friend. And called for help. He was setup on a cut ag field and let an arrow fly. Now this guy eats, sleeps, and breaths archery. Probably the best bow technician ive ever met. Shoots competition here and there. So when he told me where the arrow hit. I knew it was exactly as described. Low heart was the word. Lower than he wanted but still in the pump station

So this deer hit the dirt right away. Jumped up. Off into the brush. Down again. 30 min later he gets down to get to work. And jumps her. He was just baffled. Thought that there was no way it was possible. So why chance things. Calls us in.

Blaze got to work. About 2 hours post shot. And the dog was just amped the whole time. Blood was great. Realistically probably could have eye sight tracked this one. But at about the 300 yard mark blaze was telling us LIVE DEER! 95-100 yards up. Sure enough. This doe runs by me. Hooks a right and drops back, over her own trail right back to Tara (Blazes mom) and the hunter. To the point that Tara ducked behind a tree, avoiding betting run over She collapsed right there.

During the bloody part, we pulled the heart for further inspection. And exactly as described. This broadhead made its mark. I’ll drop the pic in the comments to avoid getting flagged for removal. I started editing entry and exits to not get flagged too. But believe me. Great shot

At first I thought it was about 500 yards from shot to jumped deer. It was actually 400.

I’d probably never believe it if I didn’t see it. This deer by all rights should have been toast in 30 yards.

What these animals can push through is absolutely wild.

Congrats Luke! Get back at it for the horns now 😎e

Continuing from yesterday’s post:

Many of you share similar thoughts to ours. While we do believe grid searching can reduce recovery rates due to ground disturbance, most experienced tracking dogs can work through that contamination with minimal impact.

What we suspect plays a bigger role is how grid searches often push wounded deer farther from the point of loss. Once bumped, a deer typically travels much farther, and occasionally in a completely different direction than before. This, we believe, is why drone recovery rates drop even more than dog recoveries after grid searches.

Drones usually rely on hunter input about the deer’s last known direction, so their search efforts are focused accordingly. If the deer changes course after being bumped, those searches may miss the mark. Additionally, drone recoveries are often limited by flight time and distance, whereas a dog can continue tracking as long as the handler and property boundaries allow.

Those are our working theories. What do you think? We’d love to hear from both tracking dog teams and thermal drone operators. Please keep it respectful as this discussion isn’t about criticizing any method, but about understanding what the data might be telling us.

🤔 If grid searching compromises the scent line for tracking dogs… why do drones suffer too?

Many claim grid searches “contaminate the scent line,” making it harder for dogs to trail a wounded deer. But developing TRAKR data shows something surprising:

🐕 Dog recoveries drop 17% after grid searches.
🚁 Drone recoveries drop even more - 41% - despite scent not being a factor at all.

So maybe the issue isn’t just scent.
Maybe grid searching changes the entire recovery dynamic.

💬 What do you think the contributing factors are? We'll post our theory tomorrow.
