𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗧𝘄𝗼 𝗪𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗢𝘂𝘁

You probably know exactly how you normally leave your bedroom.

But what happens if that route is blocked by smoke or fire?

A home fire is not the time to start looking for another way out.

Everyone in your household should know at least two ways to escape from sleeping areas whenever possible.

Walk through your home and look at it differently. Consider doors, windows, stairs, and obstacles that could affect your escape. If children are old enough, involve them in the conversation.

A familiar home can become an unfamiliar environment very quickly when it fills with smoke.

𝗦𝗺𝗼𝗸𝗲 𝗔𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗺𝘀 𝗕𝘂𝘆 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲

A working smoke alarm does something incredibly important during a fire: it gives you time.

Time to wake up.
Time to recognize the danger.
Time to get your family moving.
Time to get outside.

Don't assume your smoke alarms are working because you can see them on the ceiling. Test them.

Check alarms throughout your home, including sleeping areas, and make sure everyone in the household recognizes what the alarm sounds like and knows what to do when they hear it.

Those few minutes of preparation today could matter when seconds count.

September is 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵.

When we think about a fire emergency, we often picture what happens after someone calls 911: dispatchers answer the call, firefighters respond, and mutual aid resources are ready when an incident requires more help.

But some of the most important decisions happen before the alarm ever sounds.

Throughout September, MABAS will focus on the things individuals, families, and neighbors can do before a fire occurs. Small actions such as testing smoke alarms, planning escape routes, and knowing who nearby may need assistance can make a significant difference when seconds count.

You don't need to accomplish everything today. Start with one action and build from there.

Choose one fire-safety improvement you will make this month.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗠𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗶𝗱 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲?

Over the past three months we've explored relationships, capabilities, communication, leadership, and the partnerships that sustain mutual aid.

One theme has appeared again and again.

The strongest systems aren't defined only by equipment, staffing, or agreements.

They're defined by people who choose to work together before they're required to.

That's what makes MABAS successful across Illinois.

It's also what connects MABAS with partners like ILEAS, IPWMAN, IESMA, and the many organizations that strengthen our communities every day.

As this series comes to a close, we'd like to hear from you.

The MABAS-Illinois Division 35 Polaris Ranger 700 6x6 and QTAC 85EMS-C skid is now housed at the Jerseyville Fire Department. We are thankful this very useful tool is in our region. Thanx to Division 35 for housing it in Jerseyville, and also to MABAS Operations Branch Chief Darin Beckman for the delivery.
