Today, we begin a Parent Series focused on one of the most powerful and potentially damaging mindsets in youth sports: “MY CHILD IS FALLING BEHIND!”
The goal of this series is to help parents find more peace, confidence, and patience in the decisions that come up in today’s environment. We encourage readers to post insights, questions, and challenges as we go through this together.
Part I: We introduce ‘The Fear of Falling Behind.’ The most common concern we hear across those entering youth sports is “What if my kid falls behind?” This mindset has evolved over the years and continues to drive decisions that can ultimately undermine our children’s long-term development and, most importantly, their love for the sport.
The consequences are real: kids entering their most formative years emotionally exhausted and worn out; relying on techniques developed to win at a young age that don’t translate to higher levels; and struggling mentally because their relationship with the sport was shaped before they were mature enough to understand it.
Now compare that to a child who enters a sport with the maturity to understand what it takes to be successful, the behaviors needed to get there, and the ability to have healthy, thoughtful conversations about the challenges along the way. They learn technical skills the right way, not simply the skills that create immediate success. They develop a genuine love for the sport and begin embracing the behaviors that truly drive high performance.
That should be our goal. And that is what this series will explore over the next month.
We’re excited to dive deeper into this topic over the coming weeks and hope this series gives parents some perspective, peace, and confidence along the way.
We’ll leave you with a story that was shared with us this week. Kobe Bryant once asked Michael Jordan what he was doing when he was 12 years old, looking for insight into how MJ became one of the greatest basketball players of all time. Jordan’s response?
“I was playing baseball.”
Let that sink in.
Next up in Part 2 of our series is “Who are we actually racing?”
Be Rare was established in 2025, in Wheeling, WV. The goal of the club is to help individuals, across all age levels, develop in the sport of wrestling, providing opportunities to achieve success at the highest level.
