Focusing on breathing can be hard for some, but it can be a useful tool to help calm us down and bring us into the present moment. If you’re being mindful of your breath, you can imagine that your diaphragm (sometimes called our “respiratory muscle” which connects to bones of the lower back, lower rib cage, muscles near the pelvic region, and the xiphoid process - a part of our sternum) is a jellyfish, floating down into the belly and pelvic region on the inhale, and floating up towards the chest on an exhale. With the connections the diaphragm has to our body, it can be understood that not having a mobile diaphragm could lead to back and neck pain of all sorts, as well as other movement issues. Everything is connected, so having a “floatable” diaphragm may help us feel more free, both inside and out.
