January member spotlight! Hi, I’m Jen and I work at the Social Security Office in Selma. I’m one of the OGs of the 6:30 class—along with my sister, Kassy Cox—and I started CrossFit in 2019 just to kill time while waiting for wrestling to finish. I did weightlifting in high school but needed the accountability, and I have zero coordination for Zumba—so this fit the bill perfectly.
In 2023, I had pancreatic surgery and became diabetic overnight, so now I CrossFit for my health (and sanity). I love the motivation and accountability of the group setting—and the people here are amazing. They motivate you, push you, and support you while you chase your own goals. This place is incredibly welcoming, and the workouts can truly be modified for everyone.
I’ll be honest—I was intimidated at first because I’m not the most athletically fit person and I look nothing like the people you usually picture when you think of CrossFit. I’m so glad I got over that anxiety and just showed up, because the support here has been awesome.
I love the bike and cleans. Burpees are a crime against humanity, an insult to joy, and should come with a written apology. Proud lifetime member of the Slow Runners Club. I’m working on improving my squat form and conquering my fear of box jumps. My goal every day is Independence numbers—but if I hit Freedom, I will do a happy dance 💃💪

🎄DECEMBER MEMBER SPOTLIGHT 🎄
My name is Diana Blackwell and my husband, Zack (brother to Jake and Josh) and I moved here about 3 years ago to be closer to family. I am originally from Decatur, AL but I grew up in the Marshall Islands for about half of my childhood (might explain why I don’t really have an accent). Zack and I met at Auburn and have 3 kids who keep us very busy. I work at the Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) but if I had the choice I’d spend all my time with my little family and our farm animals. We have chickens, pigs, cows, and bees. I love spending time outdoors, cooking and being active. I started coming to the gym after we moved here and I wanted to get back in shape after having 3 babies. It was so hard to consistently workout when they were babies and I couldn’t maintain doing anything consistently (no sleep=no energy lol). I’ve only ever really participated in cardio based workouts- running, swimming, biking, etc. so I decided I wanted to try something new so I could get stronger. I was really nervous at first because I could barely lift anything and I didn’t know how to do anything. However, I was really only committed to Saturdays until I participated in the Open (which was so much fun!) last year. The problem was, I couldn’t do some of the movements and that bothered me. So I joined as a member the next week and never looked back. My favorite memory is when I learned to do a kipping pull up. I set a goal to learn how to do that once I joined and I just couldn’t get it. I was embarrassed because all the coaches were trying to give me tips before/after class and I still couldn’t connect them. But I kept trying, kept listening to the coaches and watching videos and what finally clicked for me was remembering to “push away” (thanks Ross!) and “pull through” (thanks Ashley!). Now I want to learn to do double unders and get better at anything that involves movements overhead (I dread them).
