Derence gets 🟦🟦🟦⬛️⬛️🟦 !!!

Derence has excellent jiu jitsu. He’s extremely hard to control and has an incredible ability to stay composed under pressure, turtle up safely and find his way back to the feet. That’s a skill that not many jiu jitsu guys have. Training with him has actually shifted my perspective on the sport a bit and made me think more about keeping top position. When someone doesn’t accept bottom position and constantly tries to build up, it really changes the dynamic of the roll. It’s an incredibly difficult thing to deal with and I think that’s one of his strong suits.

He’s also extremely difficult to get on the ground in the first place. Hard to keep down if you get him there and very hard to submit. Very sound defense from everywhere.

Also! He’s got some solid Muay Thai (if you ever catch him warming up on the bags before class) and is a seriously dedicated marathon runner. He really brings discipline and determination to everything he does.

We’re lucky to have him on the team. Congratulations 🥳

Young Parker gets 🟦🟦🟦⬛️⬛️🟦 !!!

Very, very, very long time coming for this young man.

I’ve known Parker for about 10 years now, and I was actually one of his first coaches when he started jiu jitsu as a kid at a different gym. He trained for roughly six years before making the decision to focus solely on wrestling when he got to high school. He’s now wrestling in college, but this summer he made his return to BJJ.

For the past three months, he’s busted his ass with us, and I am very proud to give him his blue belt before he heads back to school.

He’s an all around beast on the mats. His wrestling is fantastic, but even more than that, his ability to scramble and escape bad positions is incredible. He’s capable of creating problems from just about everywhere, and the way he can blend his wrestling and jiu jitsu makes him a handful for anybody.

Congratulations Parker 🥳

Sei unlocks 🟦🟦🟦⬛️⬛️🟦 !!!

Sei is the definition of perseverance.

He’s been training for about six years now… that is a long time to wait for a blue belt. He runs an incredibly successful salon business in both New York City and Japan, and is constantly traveling back and forth between the two, so finding the time to train isn’t easy. Despite that, he always shows up to train whenever he can.

Sei probably makes it to class about once a week at most, which makes his progress over the years even more impressive. When you train that infrequently, it can be difficult to feel yourself improving, and it takes even more patience and commitment to stick with it. Sei has done exactly that.

Over the years, he’s developed excellent fundamentals and has a very well rounded game. Most importantly, he never stopped showing up!

He has really earned this belt. Congratulations, Sei! 🥳
