Ayurveda promotes eating 2-3 solid meals a day. This allows meals to fully digest before another meal is consumed. Eating again before the previous meal or snack has digested leads to digestive ama/toxins. ⁣

Eating every 4-5 hours takes your body from using sugar for energy (sugar metabolism) and puts your body on fat metabolism as a source of fuel and energy. ⁣

This leads to better weight Managment, more stable moods and better long term regulation of insulin. ⁣

Do you find it hard or easy to go 4-5 hours between meals?

𝔸ℕ𝕋𝕀𝔹𝕀𝕆𝕋𝕀ℂ𝕊?? ℕ𝕆𝕎 𝕎ℍ𝔸𝕋??⁣

I’ve written before that our gut microbiome is a huge contributor to our serotonin levels. It is now believed that 90% of serotonin is produced in our gut. ⁣

My kids are currently on anti-biotics. This will wipe out their beneficial bacteria while also wiping out the bad bacteria that gave them strep. ⁣

After anti-biotics it is critical to repopulate the microbiome with good bacteria which supports mental health, digestive health, and the health of our immune system. ⁣

We will be increasing pre-biotic foods, doubling up on probiotics, and trying to reduce intake of probiotic killing foods. ⁣

Have you noticed a correlation between being on anti-biotics and difficult symptoms showing up after?

𝐀𝐜𝐧𝐞 𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐲

I remember going through puberty. With 3 girls all aged 18 months apart, acne was a major issue in our house.

It is true that acne during puberty is related to an explosion of hormones in the body. However, this hormonal increase is meant to be managed by the liver.

The liver regulates and expels excess hormones. When it is stagnant or dealing with excessive amounts of toxins it is unable to fulfill its role as our bodily filter.

Focus on liver health as a means of improving the health of the skin (see previous post for practices that support liver health).

Some beneficial herbs for supporting acne clearing include turmeric, red clover, echinacea, calendula, burdock and yellow dock.

Puberty is an already difficult time for most kids. My children are not quite at that age but hopefully these ayurvedic tools will come in handy when the time comes.

ℍ𝕠𝕣𝕞𝕠𝕟𝕖𝕤 𝕒𝕟𝕕 𝕥𝕙𝕖 𝕃𝕚𝕧𝕖𝕣⁣

Did you know your liver is responsible for hormonal regulation? ⁣

If you are producing excess hormones, your liver is responsible for binding them with bile for elimination from the digestive tract. ⁣

If we have too little hormones, the liver would ideally keep hormones in our blood supply to accumulate more hormones in circulation to support bodily function. ⁣

If our liver is overtaxed it cannot properly regulate hormonal function. Signs of an overtaxed liver include: constipation, acne and other skin problems, irritability and anger, fatigue, PMS, irregular menstrual cycles, among others. ⁣

Supporting our liver through proper diet and lifestyle choices is vital. ⁣

Do you know how to support your liver?

𝑹𝒂𝒘 𝒗𝒔. 𝑪𝒐𝒐𝒌𝒆𝒅

Do you like salads? I really like salads and spent many years eating A LOT of salads.

I didn’t realize when eating them that raw vegetables were not always in my best interest.

Raw food is more difficult to digest than cooked food. During certain times of the year and depending on our digestion type leaning towards cooked vegetables can support and enhance digestion.

If you experience digestive issues regularly and eat a lot of raw veggies, try switching to cooked for a few weeks and see if you notice a difference.

⁣ FERTILITY ⁣

The main contributing factor that brought me to Ayurveda was my struggle with infertility. Getting off the pill after more than 10 years, my body was not in an optimal condition for conception. ⁣

After months of reading and searching I found a holistic practice that guided me through diet, lifestyle and stress management recommendations. I got pregnant within 3 months. The whole process took me 11 months. Now I have 3 kids. ⁣

The health of a pregnancy begins months before we actually conceive. A healthy conception requires healthy plasma, lymph, blood, balanced hormones and a diet appropriate for a persons constitution. Stress also plays a huge role. This applies to both men and women. ⁣

Some signs of imbalance (excess doshas) include absent or inconsistent periods, hormonal acne around ovulation and periods, inconsistent elimination, high stress, anxiety or depression and these are just to name a few. ⁣

If you or someone you know wants to conceive in the next year, Ayurveda has wonderful tools for bringing the body back into balance and improve reproductive health. Share this post so they can benefit from Ayurvedic wisdom.

MENOPAUSE ⁣

WHAT WE DO NOW AFFECTS US FOR YEARS TO COME⁣

During my clinical Ayurvedic specialist program I studied and wrote a research paper on menopause. ⁣

One of the key takeaways was that what I’m doing now (Diet, lifestyle, stress, etc) will affect me 10 years from now. What I did in my 20’s and 30’s will also contribute. ⁣

Menopause is a transition from the pitta time of life (fire) to the Vata time of life (Ether and air). ⁣

Another key takeaway is that stress and an overly intense lifestyle is one of the biggest factors contributing to the symptoms that make menopause unbearable for so many women. ⁣

Knowing how I’ve lived for the last 20 years and not having known what I know now, I’m writing this to share that while it seems very far away for many of us, the time will come and maybe faster then we realize. Take care of your essence, slow down if and when you can, and manage stress and the overly fast paced lifestyle most of us have in common. Your 50 year old self will thank you. ⁣

If your interested in learning more about how to live more in alignment with your constitution and achieve more health/balance reach out to me. ⁣

GRAIN FREE DARK CHOCOLATE CHIP LOAF BREAD/CAKE ⁣

I’ve been enjoying experimenting with different after school baked goods using almond flour and almond butter. FAVORITE AFTER SCHOOL COOKIES⁣
Chocolate chocolate almond butter ⁣

We love these cookies at our house and they are SO easy to make. ⁣

One of my kids loves fruit and is happy to eat that after school. The other wants packaged snacks. This seems to make everyone happy and provides a good dose of fat and protein while being gluten and dairy free. ⁣

These also make a great additional to lunch boxes. Evan asks me to put this in his lunch every day. ⁣

Ingredients:⁣

1 cup almond butter⁣
2 eggs beaten ⁣
1 tsp avocado oil ⁣
1/3 cup maple syrup ⁣
1/4 cup cocoa powder⁣
1/2 tsp. Baking soda⁣
1/4 tsp. Mineral salt +a touch more for sprinkling on top ⁣
1 tsp. Vanilla extract ⁣
1/4 cup mini chocolate chip (I used ) ⁣

Directions:⁣

preheat oven to 350 degrees⁣
Mix all the ingredients together ⁣
Sprinkle a hint of salt on each cookie ⁣
Use an ice cream scooper and scoop 8-10 balls onto a parchment lined baking sheet (give them some room to grow)⁣
Bake for approximately 10 minutes ⁣
Remove from oven and allow to cook completely (about 10-15 minutes)⁣
Usually makes about 2 trays of 15-17 cookies depending on how big you make them. ⁣
Stores on the fridge for 2-3 days and longer in the freezer (I keep these on hand in the freezer at all times to add to lunch boxes)⁣

Enjoy!

My Struggle - Hairloss ⁣

One of the biggest health challenges I have faced in my life is hair loss. Genetic predisposition, child birth, motherhood, stress, COVID...none of them has helped my cause. ⁣

18 months ago I removed my extensions. 14 months ago I cut my hair short. 7 months ago I embarked on a hair loss protocol. ⁣

I know I am not alone in this but it doesn’t make it any easier to face it or to continue trying to overcome it. ⁣

I am committed to continuing this difficult journey looking for answers to heal my imbalance. Making it public is part of my healing. ⁣

We are finally starting to feel like it’s Fall in LA.

This means a shift to Fall foods is needed to balance the light, dry and cold nature of Fall.

This paleo pumpkin bread from the paleorunningmomma was super yummy and fits the Ayurvedic Fall foods bill.

The pumpkin pie spice mix is a great combination to add to this or any recipe during the Fall. It has cinnamon, ginger, lemon peel, nutmeg, cloves, cardamom, star anise, fennel and black pepper. These are all warming and digestion boosters. ⁣

Cloves are a carminative (eliminate gas) and increase hydrochloric acid in the stomach. They also aid peristalsis and warm the body as the temperatures drop. Cloves can aid with nausea when combined with ginger and cardamom which are both ingredients in this spice mix. ⁣

Ingredients⁣
· 3 eggs⁣
· 1 cup organic pumpkin puree⁣
· 1/3 cup oat or almond milk⁣
· 1/3 cup pure maple syrup⁣
· 1 tsp pure vanilla extract⁣
· 1 3/4 cups blanched almond
flour⁣
· 1/4 cup tapioca flour⁣
· 1 Tbsp coconut flour⁣
· 1 tsp baking soda⁣
· 1 tbsp pumpkin pie spice⁣
· 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon⁣
· pinch fine grain sea salt⁣
· 3 tablespoons dairy free
chocolate chip ⁣
(I use dairy
free)

Directions:⁣

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees⁣
Mix all the dry ingredients⁣
Mix all your wet ingredients⁣
Mix wet and dry ingredients together⁣
Bake for approximately 60 minutes then allow to cool for 60-90 minutes so the bread retains its shape when slicing.⁣

𝕆𝕌ℝ 𝔽𝔸𝕍𝕆ℝ𝕀𝕋𝔼 𝕎𝔸𝔽𝔽𝕃𝔼𝕊

It took me a LONG time to find a grain free waffle recipe that we all love and I felt good about giving the kids. ⁣

The oils/fat of the almond flour (and almond butter drizzle if using like me) when combined with salt facilitate production of healthy hormones and have an anti-inflammatory effect. ⁣

If you have any digestive issues, leave out the fruit. When combined with other foods it can be difficult to digest and also cause ama (digestive toxins). ⁣

WAFFLE RECIPE:⁣

Dry ingredients:⁣

1 cup finely ground almond flour ⁣
1 cup tapioca flour ⁣
2 tsp. Baking soda⁣
2 pinches of salt ⁣

Wet ingredients:⁣

4 eggs ⁣
1/2 cup applesauce⁣
2 tsp. Vanilla extract ⁣
3 tbsp. Maple syrup ⁣

Combine dry ingredients. Combine wet ingredients. Mix wet and dry ingredients together. Pour into lightly greased waffle iron and cook until done. ⁣

My kids like theirs with strawberries and a homemade chocolate and/or almond butter drizzle.
