DEC and Adirondack Mountain Reserve today announced the launch of a pilot reservation system developed to facilitate safer public access to trails through the AMR gate as well as the Round Mountain and Noonmark Mountain trailheads accessed through AMR lands. This no-cost reservation system will improve visitors’ trip planning and preparation by guaranteeing they have parking upon arrival. Walk-in visitors will not be permitted. Users arriving by bicycle or getting dropped off must also make a reservation. Reservations will be required starting May 1 through October 31, 2021. Visitors can begin registering at hikeamr.org on or after April 15.

Learn more about this pilot program in DEC’s press release: https://www.dec.ny.gov/press/122634.html.

We were more than warm enough despite the single digit temperature. The ice crystals grow like feathers and twinkle like diamonds. And the ice underneath was smooth and hard. A great skate.

Blue skies, low temps and beautiful ice feathers. I haven't checked out Bob Dill's Lakeice squarespace page yet: http://lakeice.squarespace.com/. But I'm p...

If you love maps the way I do, this one is truly inspiring. Thank you to Ryan Mitchell (the cartographer), Harry Chaucer (the lead instructor), Harry’s grandkids who jumped on and started playing immediately, and to Shelburne Farms for generous use of the Coach Barn.

We are excited to have worked with Lake Champlain Maritime Museum and Harry Chaucer from Castleton University to produce a giant map of the Lake Champlain Basin and its sub-watersheds. LCMM and Harry will use an LCBP Education and Outreach grant to work with teachers to develop lessons that use the map to connect geography and science with watershed stewardship. The lessons will inspire students to view Lake Champlain as their lake and to view stewardship as their responsibility.

Calling all K-12 students, classes, and groups! Share your water stories or original works of art with the Champlain Basin Education Initiative (CBEI) and your work might be featured in the 2020 World Water Day Celebration Event on March 25, 2020!

Lake Champlain Maritime Museum is proud to be a CBEI partner and excited to celebrate and honor the water resources all around us. This year to mark World Water Day, CBEI is holding a contest for original works that fit into one of four categories: Celebrate Water; Spread the Word; Citizens Science and Civic Action; and Act Locally Think Globally. Original works can be writing, art, photography, or videography and individuals or teams can have up to 3 entries maximum. The deadline for submissions has been extended to March 10. More information and complete contest rules are here: http://watershedmatters.lcbp.org/contest.html

Yesterday, for the final field trip of my Avian Ecology class, we went to the Four Brothers Islands. It may be the time of year for eggs and chicks, but it's too much of a good thing for the cormorants and ring-billed gulls. The cormorants have white-washed every tree with guano and snapped off every twig on every branch. The tall white pines, and even the invasive buckthorn, are nothing but eerie, bleached skeletons.
