“Thank you for being a friend”

Choosing me has always been hard. Coming out the first time at 14 didn’t result in the open arms and acceptance that I wanted. So in order to survive I had to go back to being someone I wasn’t for a long time.

When I was 20 I decided choosing me might not be easy, but it was what I had to do. I made peace with the knowing that I wouldn’t have the support I wanted from those closest to me. And even though being angry sometimes felt like it would be easier, I chose to focus on creating happiness.

I began building my chosen family, my Tribe. I created the support system that everyone needs and deserves. I chose to bring Ryder and Copper into my life when I needed them the most and right away they loved me no questions asked. That kind of love is everything.

Choosing your own happiness can feel lonely. But it doesn’t have to be. Having a Tribe makes you feel like you’re not alone when you’re making tough choices for yourself. If you don’t have that you have to go out and find it. And if you can’t find it, you have to create it.

To Ryder and Copper and everyone in my chosen family, my Tribe. Thank you for being a friend.
