Gordon's Harness Horses

Gordon's Harness Horses This page is all about my harness racing "business." It started back in July of 2011. You'll enjoy keeping up with what's happening. See you at the races!

It's been an absolute thrill for me.

Ryders Up's debut at the Morrow County Fair yesterday was what I guess you might expect from a 2-year-old in his first start with little time spent behind a starting gate.

He didn't even get close to the gate at the start. At the quarter mile mark, he was about 20 lengths behind the field. But he did get 5th (out of five horses). :)

Some gate schooling is on the docket which, no doubt, will help greatly in his next start.

Speaking of next starts...Journeyssharpedge will be back in action this Thursday evening at Scioto Downs. We were aiming to get him in at Northfield Park but when that didn't work, Ron obviously decided to roll the dice at Scioto again.

Journey will be in race 9 which has an estimated post time of about 9 pm. Kayne Kauffman will be our driver. Journey will be leaving the gate from post 9.

Here are the entries for our 2-year-old's first-ever start!

He'll be racing at the Morrow County Fair in Mt. Gilead on Monday, August 31st. As you can see, he'll be in the first race of the card.

You can see from the results here that last Thursday's race was again not what we wanted to see.

But look at the "off time" near the top, right-hand side of the results. 11:59 pm.

After race 9, there was nearly an hour and a half rain delay. Remember...Journey was in race 16 which already had an estimated race time of 11:45. And he had to warm up at some point and there wasn't much time between races. So I'm sure the Steck crew were pulling their hair out to deal with these most unusual circumstances.

It was decided to draw blood from Journey and what we learned was that he was sick. This was most surprising as he didn't exhibit any symptoms, e.g. not eating well. Plus, we learned his liver function was off which can cause a horse to not have much "go."

So, we're going to work toward getting Journey back to normal and then race a few times at Northfield Park.

Moving on to Ryders Up...it looks as though he'll be making his debut at Mt. Gilead (Morrow County Fair) on Monday, August 31st. We'll know the entries at the end of this coming week.

I got to jog Ryder this morning on the main track at the fairgrounds. He does have some spunkiness as he's ready to go when a horse comes at him from behind. You better be holding on tight.

I went our with four others, too, with one of the four being Journey. While there were a few rain drops a couple different times, overall it was a nice morning.

Just a couple updates since my last post.

Journey is scheduled to race this Thursday at Scioto Downs. He'll be in the last race of the night which will go off not many minutes before midnight. Have I ever said how ridiculous this is?

IT'S RIDICULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There...I said it!

Regarding Ryders Up...you may recall he was scheduled to race at the Hartford Fair in Croton this past Saturday afternoon. All of the rain caused all of the harness racing to be cancelled.

We'll have to wait and see where and when the first race of his career will be.

Here are the entries for Journey's next race at Scioto Downs this Thursday.

Believe it or not...I'll actually get to go to the track. Race 1. 7-horse field. Post position 3 with Chris Page in the bike.

It's time to get rollin'!!!

Here are the entries for Journey's race this coming Thursday at Scioto Downs.

With Journey having post 8 and a 15-1 morning line (tied for last) with his race going off at 11:30 pm, it doesn't get any better than that, right?

Racing this late is just stupid (did I say that out loud?)

My fingers were crossed as I arrived at the Steck barn Saturday morning. The forecast was a bit "iffy," but we stayed dry. It actually turned out to be a really nice day.

I jogged five of them with none of them being either Journey or Ryders Up.

Journey didn't get in last week, but I anticipate he will get in this week. There is no racing on Wednesday this week at Scioto Downs so I'm guessing if we do race, it will be on Thursday.

Nothing yet on Ryder's debut.

For the first time in several Saturdays, I was able to leave my rain gear in the trunk of my car.

Sunshine...blue skies. For once, a perfect day from a weather perspective.

As far as racing for this upcoming week...Journey isn't racing and Ryders Up isn't racing at Marysville (as I thought could be a possibility).

I'll keep you updated as things change.

Here are the official entries for Journey's late-night race this Wednesday.

Here are the official entries for Journey's late-night race this Wednesday.

Yesterday morning looked to be a dry day. Most of the horsemen already on the track were wearing t-shirts with no rain gear.

So I went out on the back track at the Delaware fairgrounds without rain gear (first time on a Saturday I could do that). I admit the skies didn't look too friendly in keeping me dry. On lap three, it started to sprinkle...then a bit heavier...then even heavier. Are you kidding me?

I got back into the barn as fast as I could without getting soaked and Ron said, "Well, we know Gordon's here." He was right. It seems, regardless of the weather report, if I show up on a Saturday, it's gonna rain. And for 5-10 minutes, it rained hard...making the track even muddier than it already was.

In keeping with full transparency, it didn't rain any more and by the time I finished jogging my last horse...eight in total...the main track was in pretty good shape.

It appears there is a good chance we'll see Ryders Up, our two-year-old c**t, race at the Marysville fair on July 28th. There's nothing certain about that prediction. Of course, I'll let you know as we get closer to that date.

Going to Journey and his last race on Wednesday night, July 15th, unfortunately we got another 7th-place finish. Post position 10 (second tier) really hurt us. Journey's final time was 1:54.4. Yet, he finished just 3 3/4 lengths behind the winner.

He's set to go again this coming Wednesday...once again in race 14 which is estimated to go off just after 11 pm. His post is a bit better with Journey having post 6.
