When it comes to the advanced exercises, you have to remember their base was from the foundation exercises you have already learned.

Let’s look at Overhead. Sometimes you have to break the exercises into step or building blocks to get to the finished product.

- timing of the upper and lower body is a must. When the upper and lower work together you get the support you need

- add it a controlled small lift of the pelvis. If you struggle here the next step won’t work

- then take it to a Rollover

- then the Jackknife

Maybe you don’t get all the steps but you can get at least one to build strength

Three props that can help you or your client with the Roll Up!

Let’s face it the struggle can be real…

The Roll Up isn’t so easy and for many can be frustrating. There can be many reasons why one can struggle with this exercise, but fear not there are solutions to help you build strength for this exercises.

Here are three tools or props to help build strength for success!

1- small pillow: helps support the spine where you get stuck, can be placed on the upper or lower back

2- large pillow: supports the full spine and helps with gripping the front of the legs. Place it along the spine and head

3- foot loop: helps anchor the legs and provides a closed chain for the legs.

These props aren’t meant to be part of your practice but to help build your practice. These props are just tools to help your body and mind build the exercise and make you feel successful!

This is one of the most challenging exercises in Pilates, Control Balance.

Here are three ways to work it.

1- work the kicks from an overhead position and work the extension of the leg up to the ceiling while holding the other leg still

2- work the split with one leg reaching for the side of the reformer and other leg extending up

3- take it to the mat and put it all together

What a challenge! But it you know how to use your equipment you can build your mat practice.

Timing is a key component in many, if not all Pilates exercises.

Let’s look at Overhead & Jackknife
- one is performed on the reformer the other the mat but very similar. However the support of the straps on the reformer helps build strength in the upper body and support the weight of the lower body.

Teaser on the reformer and the mat.
- both difficult, but again the straps are providing support and allowing you to work on timing and build strength

The use of the equipment is so clever, remember the heart of The Method is the mat, but the apparatus will always help build and connect to the mat.

Finally time to play on my Guillotine!

I thought it would be best to start with an exercise that I / we all know well in the Pilates community, Tower & Reverse Tower. While it is the same exercise, the way it feels and the feedback each apparatus shares is different.

Things that they share:
- spine and hamstring stretching
- supports lift and building strength from the hips or pelvis
- spinal articulation
- and it just feels good on the body!

Things that are different:
- the Guillotine provides more space for those bodies that are tighter or larger framed
- Guillotine points out your imbalances quick. With the bar being supported on either side by springs, you can quickly tell which side of the body is pushing more.
- Guillotine also tells you if you are using Control on both the rolling up and down.

TAKE AWAYS:
*Learn the exercise on the Cadillac first, more supportive
*use the Guillotine to challenge your body and mind and work the imbalances.

This is a great series for upper body strength, centering and control

Here is the series:
- reverse chest expansion
- arm circles
- shave
- hug
- bicep curls

Great series to strengthen the upper body, open the front body and work the hamstrings. Don’t be fooled your abs and hips have to stabilize the body or you are face planting into the springs. You have to have core control to do a series like this.

I recently attended .citymovesme in Nashville. Here are few take aways.

You can never stop learning

Good teachers invest in their education and continue to grow

Get uncomfortable - get up there, be the body and learn from the presenter

Network - meet new people and connect with folks you already know

Have fun! Experience a new city, and take a friend

What I LEARNED:

See the potential in every client

Let them MOVE

Mat is the Method

Translate the Pilates movement into something they can understand or relate to

And this is my favorite -
“When the body shakes, it is the weakness leaving the body!”
