2020 was a challenging year for a lot of folks. It did, however, provide the opportunity for so many to get out on the water.

Boating is an enjoyable way to get some sunshine and stay active while safely distancing.

As we leave 2020 behind, let's sail into 2021 ready for new challenges and ready to enjoy the beauty the water has to offer!

Whether you are going through your current vessel in preparation to sell, or shopping for a vessel that is new to you, be certain to check over your exhaust systems and their connections.

Exhaust systems: Are there any leaks? Condition of hoses?

Look for leaks or signs of previous leaks with the engine cold.  Determine areas where leaks are suspected.  Then start the engine and observe if there are any leaks. Repair leaks as needed and only use quality marine parts.

Are the connections double clamped?

Every connection in the system should be secured with at least two non-overlapping stainless-steel clamps. Clamps should be a minimum width of a ½” or 12mm.

It is important to take an inventory of your vessel condition, whether that is at the beginning or end or a season, or if you're about to sell your vessel. Today, let's talk about Shaft logs.

Shaft logs: Dripping water? Is the packing gland adjustable or dripless? Is the hose in good condition? Are the hose clamps in good condition?

Adjustable packing glands are bronze and can be repacked with flax packing. If the bronze is green, heavily corroded or covered in salt crystals they can be cleaned with CLR and then protected with a corrosion blocker. If the seal is dripless, sometimes the shaft will have a second set of seals on the shaft that can be installed without removing the shafts from the coupler, otherwise the vessel will need to be hauled out for repair.

For more information about shaft log installation refer to ABYC P-6

Do you currently or plan to soon haul your boat out of the water for pre-winter service?  This is a perfect time to have a condition & valuation survey with bottom inspection conducted.   Most insurance providers require a survey report to obtain insurance.  Also, most marinas along the southern California coast require a survey to rent a slip.

We recently surveyed this 2002 50' Sea Ray Express Cruiser for insurance purposes.

With Prepurchase surveys, we always recommend having the vessel hauled of the water so we can conduct a bottom inspection. While out of the water, we will percussion sound the bottom of the hull for signs of damage and delamination. In a addition to the hull, we will also inspect the shafts, propellers, struts, cutlass bearings, trimtabs, rudder, and thruhulls. Some vessels have more under water components than others. This 59 Carver Marquis is equipped with Naiad stabilizers, Bow thruster, Stern thruster, hydraulic swim platform, and under water lights. All of these components can only be inspected with the vessel out of the water.

Tired of being cooped up and unable to visit your favorite places? The COVID pandemic has pushed us all to find healthy outdoor activities full of sunshine and fresh air. Boating is a great opportunity to get outside, safely socially distance, and find independence out on the water. If you are searching for a vessel, don’t forget to hire a marine surveyor to inspect your prospective new purchase. A professional inspector can save you time and money and help you determine the right vessel for you and your maritime desires.

Whether you are looking for a pleasure craft, a livaboard or travelling vessel, or something for professional use, the Marine Specialists at USABoatSurvey can help you make the right decision in purchasing a vessel. Your pre-purchase survey includes a full inspection of the vessel and all of its systems, a sea trial during which the inspector will take the vessel out on the water and observe running efficiency, as well as a full written report documenting all of the findings from the inspection. This tool can help you negotiate pricing, obtain insurance after purchase, and know whether the boat in question will meet your needs.
