The Top 3 Aspects of the Optimal Workout Program, Continued…

Last week we asked our founder Scott for his Top Three. Last week we discussed his Number One. Today let’s dive into Number Two! 🤓

“Number Two: It must have a component that raises heart rate consistently and challenges/improves the cardiovascular system.

However you choose to achieve this challenge is a personal preference, but one way or another we must challenge the cardiovascular system. Running or incline walking, hiking, martial arts, conditioning workout classes, etc. are all great options. Very simply though, anything that stresses the heart and lungs will help the system to respond by getting stronger and when you are in great cardiovascular shape, everything is easier and feels better! 🫁

Personally I learned this lesson the hard way. I ignored my cardiovascular fitness for years and only focused on muscle building. This resulted in my looking decent but not having the fitness level to back it up or to do many of the things I wanted to do athletically. When I began practicing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu I would get tired almost immediately and this was extremely discouraging. Once I began adding in consistent cardiovascular training via our TRAIN classes and some light running and conditioning workouts, my cardiovascular conditioning improved dramatically and so did my quality of life. Gotta get that cardio in!” 💪

Not sure where to start? Find something you enjoy and commit to doing it consistently. Your heart, lungs, and future self will thank you. 🙏

Next week, we’ll wrap up this series with Scott’s Number Three.

74 years old… and rebuilding her strength after a stroke. 💪💥

This month, we’re proud to highlight Alice.

At 73 years old, Alice walked into Iron Legion after recovering from a stroke that left her in the hospital for nearly a year.

She’s regained independence. She’s driving herself again. And she continues to get stronger every single week.

Alice trains with Coach Grace, who’s had a front-row seat to her journey:

“Alice has been at the Legion for almost a full year now, and the progress she’s made is incredible! She always brings in the best stories (and occasionally sweet treats😁) and has incredible, witty humor! After recovering from a stroke, her determination and desire to improve is inspiring and I love being able to be a part of her journey!”

And in Alice’s own words:

“I am really pleasantly surprised about how much I like it at Iron Legion. I am 74 years old and I’ve never liked a gym before in my life until now, which is quite an endorsement, because I have tried joining other gyms, but this place is different. Everyone is incredibly friendly and really nice. It is inclusive. I see people who are older than me, different shapes and sizes, and at different starting points. People aren’t showing off all the time. It’s wonderful, and I actually like coming here. I never thought I’d say that about a gym. And I am so much stronger than I was when I started.”

Alice’s story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible with time, consistency, and the willingness to start. We're incredibly proud of her journey!

Drop a ❤️ or a comment to show Alice some love.

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a gym where…

You had a coach to teach you how to do everything correctly?

You never felt intimidated or insecure?

You always felt comfortable and welcomed?

There were other people who liked and felt like you?

There is.

We built Iron Legion Strength Co. just for you.

A small, private personal training gym where we will teach you how to lift weights, properly and safely with a supportive and welcoming community built around the simple concept of empowerment through strength.

Lift Heavy. Be Kind.

They worry they’ll be judged. They think they need to “get in shape first.” They feel uncomfortable in crowded fitness spaces.

Consistency adapts.

Your best won’t look the same every day, and it’s not supposed to.

Some days you’re hitting PRs.
Some days you’re just proud you made it in.

That’s not falling off.
That’s consistency doing its job.

Keep going. We’ve got you. 🤝

If you can’t measure progress, it’s a lot harder to stay motivated.

This week, we asked Iron Legion founder Scott Baumann what he believes are the three most important aspects of an optimal workout program for most people. Here’s what he had to say.

“Number One: It must be progressive in nature. 📈

Number Two: It must have a component that raises heart rate consistently and challenges/improves the cardiovascular system. 🫀

Number Three: It must involve some type of resistance training/strength building exercise. 🏋️‍♂️

Number One: It must be progressive in nature. What I mean by that is there must be a way to see and track progress and improvement. Without this aspect, without being able to tell if we are improving; it can be very difficult to stick with a program. This is why video games are addicting to kids (and adults!). Most of them are the ultimate in progression. Beat this level, move up to the next level, learn new tricks and acquire new skills, move to the next level. The most popular games are the ones that do this the best.

Likewise, the best workout programs are the ones that do this the best as well. Strength training is the best type of workout, in my opinion, for this because it is very easy to track, measure, and see progress. We can track the number of sets and reps we are able to perform with a given resistance and then very clearly we can see how we perform over the next couple of days, weeks and months against those numbers.

Conversely, the workouts that are the most difficult to track can be the most difficult to stick with as it is hard to tell if you are getting better or not and that can be discouraging. For example, the way that most people approach cardio makes it difficult to measure improvement, so they use weight loss as their measure and as we all know, that can be very frustrating as it takes so long to see the results on the scale or in the mirror.”

Next week, we’ll dive into Number Two: why every good program should include a component that challenges and improves your cardiovascular system. 💪🫁

Over a month later, and we’re still thinking about Maine’s Strongest Mom 2026. 😍💪

Watching these moms step up to the challenge, push through heavy deadlifts, battle through sandbag events, and cheer each other on was something special.

Strength isn’t just about what you can lift, it’s about showing up, doing hard things, and finding out you’re capable of more than you thought.

We’re incredibly proud of every athlete who took the competition floor and grateful to everyone who helped make the event such a success. 🙏

How building strength can transform more than just our bodies. 💪🧠

This week’s message from our founder, Scott, is all about how strength training goes beyond building muscle. 👇

Strengthen the body.

Fortify the mind.

Nourish the soul.

These words are etched forever on the walls of both of our Iron Legion locations and for good reason.

In all my years of doing this, I have never tired of seeking of witnessing the remarkable change that physical training can make in a person’s life.

When we challenge the body by asking it to do hard things, we not only strengthen the muscles, we strengthen the heart.

And not just the living breathing heart, but the emotions of the heart and the soul.

Our minds become stronger as we become more confident and more resilient.

We begin to believe in ourselves and our abilities to overcome obstacles and fears.

Our soul becomes healed and whole and we tap into the struggle and the power of will.

All of this from the simple act of challenging the body with weights a couple of times per week.

It’s absolutely incredible. 👏
