Merv Rettenmund, a distinguished Major League Baseball player and coach, passed away at the age of 81 on December 7th. This was posted by a family member, Melvyn Rettenmund

Born on June 6, 1943, in Flint, Michigan, Rettenmund's career in baseball was marked by his versatility, dedication, and significant contributions both on and off the field. Rettenmund was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the 19th round (257th overall) of the 1965 NFL draft. Unbeknownst to the Cowboys, he had signed a professional baseball contract with the Baltimore Orioles of MLB one day earlier on November 28.
Rettenmund began his professional career with the Baltimore Orioles, making his MLB debut on April 14, 1968. He quickly became known for his exceptional hitting and ability to play all three outfield positions. During his time with the Orioles, he was a key player in their three consecutive American League pennants from 1969 to 1971 and their World Series victory in 1970. Rettenmund also played for the Cincinnati Reds, San Diego Padres and California Angels, winning another World Series with the Reds in 1975.
After retiring as a player, Rettenmund transitioned to coaching, where he continued to make a significant impact. He served as a hitting coach for several teams, including the Texas Rangers, Oakland Athletics, San Diego Padres, Atlanta Braves, and Detroit Tigers. His expertise and mentorship helped shape the careers of many players, and he was part of the coaching staff for three more World Series championships.
Merv Rettenmund will be remembered not only for his remarkable achievements on the field but also for his dedication to the sport and his ability to inspire and mentor others. His legacy will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and the many lives he touched throughout his illustrious career. May he Rest in Peace.
