It’s definitely heating up out on the course, but sometimes the most important work happens inside the grounds maintenance facility.

During periods of turf stress, the details matter. Sharp reels, properly adjusted cutting units, well-maintained equipment, and even correct tire pressures all play a role in turf performance and plant health.

Today, we welcomed Parker Nemeth and Jonathan Leary as they join us for the summer from BCTI. Under the guidance of one of the best in the industry, they learned the fundamentals of grinding, setting, and maintaining our greens reels to ensure the highest quality of cut possible.

It’s a pleasure to introduce Parker and Jonathan to the Deerwood family as they begin their journey into what many would call the lost art of golf course equipment management. The future of our industry depends on the next generation learning these valuable skills, and we’re proud to be part of that process. Golf Course Superintendents Association of New Jersey

The turf team is certainly appreciating the cloud cover today as we continue preparing the golf course for the impending heat wave.

A big thank you to Dave from Ewing for spending the day onsite helping us address several irrigation concerns. Deerwood presents some unique challenges when it comes to irrigation. Between the winds, varied soil profiles, wooded areas, and wetlands, proper irrigation design goes well beyond simply turning on sprinklers. Head placement, nozzle selection, and water distribution all play a critical role in delivering consistent results.

We’re going to test some low-trajectory nozzles in key areas to help combat the ever-present Deerwood winds and improve irrigation efficiency.

The ponds are getting low, the team is getting prepared, and now we’re all hoping Mother Nature delivers some much-needed rainfall. Until then, we’ll keep doing everything we can to keep the course healthy and performing at a high level.

Taking advantage of a break in the heat to apply another round of wetting agent, paired with a fungicide, growth regulator, and key micronutrients to keep the turf healthy and performing at a high level.

These proactive applications help improve moisture management, strengthen plant health, and prepare the course for the challenges that summer weather brings.

The new-to-us Flex 2100s have arrived!

These mowers will be utilized on our weaker greens where a little extra tender loving care is needed. Their lighter footprint and precision cut will help us manage some of our more sensitive turf areas as we continue to improve playing conditions throughout the golf course.

Every piece of equipment has a purpose, and these units will be an important tool in protecting and improving our most vulnerable greens.

Taking full advantage of the break in the weather as we prepare for another round of impending heat.

Venting, overseeding, moisture management, and recovery practices are all in motion as we continue protecting some of our more sensitive turf areas.

June is a critical growing window and the team is pushing hard to keep conditions moving in the right direction. Bentgrass loves these 50° nights!

The turf team getting after it! #14 received a fresh venting and overseeding as we continue strengthening some of our weaker greens ahead of the upcoming heat. These cultural practices will continue throughout the week as we push into one of the best growing months of the season.

June is a great month to grow Bentgrass. 🌱⛳️

Just a group of turf professionals diligently inspecting conditions on the ground. This recent rain event has triggered another wave of ABW activity. You will begin to notice the pupae feeding on the turf roots. The orange discoloration visible in the turf is not a disease, but rather the result of insect feeding activity.

On another note, there is no leak on the 18th approach. The bunker drain line was cut when the pipe was pulled for the irrigation upgrade. Once it dries we will look at making the drainage repair.
