Founded in 1963, the University of Toronto Karate Club was the first university club in Canada. Under the tutelage of 8th Degree Black Belt Shihan Suenori Tominaga since 1970, UTKC has provided quality instruction in traditional Shotokan karate to interested members of the U of T community, with an emphasis on learning good basics. UTKC is a non-commercial, not-for-profit martial arts club. We ar...e an officially sanctioned Athletic Club at the U of T Athletic Centre. We abide by a Club Constitution and our mandate is to provide our members with the opportunity to practice karate and to receive quality instruction at U of T. All matters relating to the teaching and practicing of karate-do at the U of T Karate Club are handled by Tominaga Sensei and the Senior Black Belts. Collectively they are responsible for the technical direction of the Club, including curriculum, training policy and procedures, and the maintenance of the highest possible standards in all aspects of Karate-do. The UTKC is volunteer-run and is administered by a member-elected Club Executive. The Executive takes care of all operational aspects of running the club. UTKC is a member of Karate Ontario and the National Karate Association, the sport governing bodies for karate in Ontario and in Canada. Membership with these bodies confirms that the UTKC meets the technical standards set by these bodies, and that our instructor has a legitimate and recognized rank. In addition, UTKC is the flagship dojo of Jinbukai Canada, the umbrella organization of which Tominaga Sensei is the head instructor.

Watch Wesley and Xinying turn smaller moves into flowing combos 🥊

While Wesley holds the pads, Xinying (right) performs different strike combos, making sure she gets out range each time.

Notice what Xinying does 👀
✅ Attacks right after evading (00:01)
✅ Lands her kick with a punch at the same time for max effect (00:19)
✅ Combines combo + evasion smoothly (00:27)

Our exercises start small. This way, we build on them one by one — so that you’re doing full combos before you know it.

See Maybelle do a takedown—using a move from kata👀

In this case, the kata (choreographed sequence) is from Jion, which highlights power and stance changes.

The steps are:

✅Block and pull the opponent in.
✅Destabilize their front leg.
✅Spin them off-balance while controlling their arm.
✅Follow up with a final attack.

The defence becomes effective by starting the takedown early, easing into it right after the initial block. This makes sure the opponent keeps falling forward—and onto the ground.

See Alex defending in four different ways - all against a charging opponent 👀

What Alex does each time:
✅Block or deflect using the opponent’s momentum
✅Strike with what’s ready—open palm, elbow, or knee
✅Pull or guide the opponent into his counter

Alex makes his defences effective by turning them into attacks: he follows up each block or deflection with a sharp attack that stops the opponent in their track.

Jion — meaning “temple sound”— is a kata or choreographed form practice in the Shotokan style. Jion teaches the ability to move quickly and securely between stances:

✅ Front stance (zenkutsu dachi) — the “orthodox” stance that front-loads attacks and defences, making sure you are always moving forward.

✅ Horse stance (Kiba dachi) — a grounded stance that distributes weight evenly, adding extra protection to strong strikes and blocks.

🌦uoftkarate  one to pay attention to the world around them.
