Back with more Water Safety Tips! ⁣

Prevention is key🔐⁣

🔑A child can drown in as little as 1-2 inches of water. Removing toys, draining kiddie pools and tubs, and having barriers and alarms is critical in water safety. ⁣

⚓️LIFEJACKETS! In open water, regardless of swimming ability, everyone should wear a life jacket. This applies to boats, kayaks, paddle boards, etc. ⁣

🛟 The best life jacket you can use is a US Coast Guard approved life vest. Avoid items with arm attachments, as these can hinder mobility. ⁣

⛵️While some, such as Puddle Jumpers or this style, may be USCG approved, they should 𝙉𝙊𝙏 be used in place of a lifejacket. ⁣

👀If a child goes missing, check the nearest body of water first! Pools, ponds, rivers, tubs, etc. Drowning is silent, so while it may be nearby, you likely won’t be able to hear anything.

May is Water Safety Month! Today we’re talking about vigilance. ⁣

What to know: ⁣

🔹 Drowning is the #1 cause of death in children ages 1-4. ⁣
🔹 88% of children drown with at least 1 adult present. ⁣
🔹 9 out of 10 drowning deaths happen when a caregiver is supervising, but not pay attention. ⁣

If you’ve heard of the Bystander Effect, this is very similar. Often when we’re in a place with several adults and children in and around the water, it’s assumed that someone is watching. This should not be assumed. It needs to be clearly communicated to all parties present. ⁣

What to Do: ⁣

👁️ Assign a 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿. This is a specific person dedicated to watching kids in and around water. This involves communication between all adults so that everyone is aware of who the Water Watcher is. ⁣

🪸Take turns! Rotate who is Water Watcher every 30 minutes or so, in an effort to keep vigilance and attention. ⁣

🛟Hire a lifeguard! If you’re hosting a pool party this summer, considering hiring a lifeguard. This provides safety and peace of mind to all those attending, and ensure that someone is watching the pool area at all times. ⁣

Prevention is key! Stay safe!
