We all know crunches target the abdominal muscles but planking can be just as effective. Planking improves isometric strength while improving posture. Variations of the plank can strengthen other muscles as well including back , arms , shoulders , glutes , and hamstrings among others. Planks can be done anywhere and have a very low likelihood of injury which makes them great for beginners. Once the original plank can be done comfortably give the workout pictured a try and see how you do!

So you've mastered the traditional pull-up. You already know the benefits of the exercise and are looking to challenge yourself even further. Pull-up variations are your answer. By changing your grip, body position, and movement in general you will create increased strength and body awareness that the traditional pull-up just can't attain. The video posted above shows a number of pull-ups including closed grip, wide grip, L sit, alternate grip, and many others. Doing these variations will not only engage the back and arm muscles from different angles, but will also activate different muscles entirely like the L sit engaging the core and legs. Next time you do your pull-up routine see how many of these variations you can accomplish!
