'One thing I never liked was bullies. There was this one guy at school, a right big bully, a big, tall geezer. Anyway, I was going to the toilet one day, and he was there and he wanted me to give him some money. I don't like that, I don't give no one anything. As a young lad, I had a chip on my shoulder; I'd fight anyone. So he was in the toilet and he said to me, 'I want two bob off you.' I said, 'You ain't getting anything off me, mate.'

He was holding his hand out for the money, so I took hold of his fingers and I bent them right back. He was going, 'Aaaarrggh!' I said 'You want money, do you? You ain't getting my money, mate.' I bent his fingers back so far that I broke one of them.

He came out of the toilet screaming in pain, and he fell down on the floor. I walked out of the toilet and there was all these kids out there waiting to find out what happened and I said, 'Go and pick him up.'

He had to go to hospital to have a splint put on his finger. I might have been small, but I didn't give anything to anybody. I guess even then I had it in me to be a fighter, because I wouldn't back down from anyone, even if I thought I was going to get a hiding.'

Very true!

'A couple years ago, I posted a photo to my Instagram of what a boxer looks like after a winning bout. My face was swollen, the bruises were dark purple, and the blood was dried. It looked like it hurt a ton, but my expression was calm and I had the start of a sly smile on my face. That photo perfectly captures the mentality it takes to be a fighter: If you want to experience the thrill of victory, you've got to be willing to go through hell. And it's gonna hurt.'
