Zhen Dao School (or, in Chinese, Zhen Dao Pai -真道派) –is a Chinese tradition of spiritual and physical self-improvement, which belongs to the Higher Way, and is the one that has saved formerly confidential methods of an ancient art of Daoist Immortals. All the practice of the School is built in accordance with Daoist principle of simultaneous cultivation of body and spirit. It lets an individual f

ollow the Way of self-improvement the most harmoniously and optimally, starting with small-scale results (health promotion and internal harmony attainment) to the main purpose – liberation of consciousness and comprehension of own Original Nature. Study program includes learning methods of work with energy (Qigong), corporal practices (Dao Yin, Taiji quan), breathing practices (Tuna), and, what is the most important, the core of Daoism Tradition – practices of Inner Alchemy (Neidan).

Precelestial Original Spirit is precisely the active body of empty Xing-nature: true emptiness yet wondrous presence.

Precelestial Original qi is precisely the principle-qi within Taiji: wondrous presence yet true emptiness.

Thus, “These two emerge together but bear different names; together they are called the Mystery. Mystery upon Mystery—the gate of all wonders.”

Original qi is the Mystery;
Original Spirit is the Mystery upon Mystery.

When Spirit and qi unite and give birth to Original Essence, this is called “the Essence of supreme Yang.”

Buddhism says: “I have one treasure, hidden in the mountain of form.”
Daoism says: “The one point of precelestial yang-essence is not in the heart or kidneys, but in the one opening of the Mysterious Pass.”

The Mysterious Pass is the mysterious opening born when Spirit and qi join together as the medicine, and from that medicine give rise to it. When this medicine is born, one then sees the “mountain of form.”

When the mountain of form topples, Essence is entirely transformed into qi, and one attains the pe*******on of exhausted outflows.

Therefore it is said: “Knock down the temple-pole before the gate.”

Perhaps the most important warning in this whole passage is the danger of 幻丹 — the illusory or phantom Elixir.

This is a central issue in Neidan.

A phantom Elixir is not sheer nothing; it is a false product generated by wrong method and wrong recognition. It may come with sensations, visions, excitations, altered states, or bodily changes. It may even convince the practitioner that something remarkable is happening. But because it is formed from postcelestial activity mistaken for precelestial medicine, it does not lead to true reversal.

This is why so many classical texts insist on correct discrimination.

One must distinguish:

• Original Spirit from discursive consciousness,
• precelestial Qi from formed breath-energy,
• true return from self-generated excitement,
• and subtle inward gestation from gross physiological or psychic phenomena.

Without this discernment, one may cultivate very diligently and yet strengthen the very illusion one needs to transcend.

The cognitive spirit is not wholly false — but it becomes corrupted.

The passage is very subtle here. It does not say that the cognitive spirit is evil in itself. Rather, it says that it enters the Central Palace carrying “the root of affective attachment and the stem of intellection,” and then, through acquired habits and defilements, becomes increasingly debased.

This is important.

The cognitive spirit is not originally presented as some alien intruder from outside the Dao. It is still a derivative function arising from emptiness. But once it is mixed with habitual conditioning, emotional entanglement, social imprinting, and sensory attachment, it hardens into the postcelestial ruler of the person.

This is why the text says that all the inferior tendencies of postcelestial nature are drawn in through the pull of knowing consciousness. The problem is not simple awareness; the problem is appropriating awareness into self-reference, then allowing it to become entangled in the seven emotions and six desires. The original clarity becomes the servant of confusion. What should have remained open and transparent becomes stained, narrowed, and agitated.

Original Spirit in its primal condition is not analytic; it is whole. But once the acquired mind arises, that same luminous ground is appropriated and broken into subject-object cognition, conceptual distinction, evaluative grasping, and narrative self-awareness.

This is why ordinary intelligence, however brilliant, is not the same as spiritual realization. In fact, brilliance often increases the power of the acquired mind to defend its own dominance.

The more refined the child becomes, the less willing it is to yield to the mother.

This explains why the text calls Original Spirit the mother and the cognitive spirit the child. The metaphor is not sentimental but exact. The child comes from the mother, depends on the mother, and yet may forget the mother. Likewise, discriminative consciousness comes forth from Original Spirit, but once developed it acts as if it were autonomous.

Inner alchemy is therefore not the destruction of the child, but the restoration of proper relationship.

The child must return to the mother.
Thought must return to Spirit.
Discursive awareness must return to original
luminosity.

This return is one meaning of “reversing the course.”

In the original condition, true nature (Xing) is rooted in the clear emptiness of Original Spirit. But after the fall into postcelestial polarity, the acquired emotional-complex begins to occupy the place that belongs to true nature. In other words, what is merely conditioned temperament begins to masquerade as one’s true self.

At the same time, true nature is dragged downward and mixed into emotional life, becoming obscured, fragmented, and difficult to recognize.

This is one of the deepest psychological insights in Neidan.

Most people live not from true nature, but from a composite of habit, memory, reaction, preference, injury, desire, aversion, and emotional patterning. Yet they call this “who I am.” The text is saying that this is precisely the postcelestial confusion: Qing-emotion usurps the throne of Xing-nature, while true nature becomes submerged in Qing-emotion.

Therefore cultivation is not self-improvement in the ordinary sense; it is the disentangling of true nature from the emotional-acquired matrix that has occupied its place.

The sentence “When these three are united as one, the Dao can be accomplished” gives the entire method in seed form.

The fallen human condition is one of fragmentation: Spirit is scattered into thought, qi is scattered into restless movement, essence is scattered into desire and physiological dissipation.

The alchemical path is therefore a work of recollection, in the strict sense of “collecting again.”

Spirit must return from wandering cognition to inward luminosity.
Qi must return from scattered expenditure to
centered harmony.
Essence must return from outward leakage to inward fullness.

Their reunion is the restoration of the original whole.

This is why inner alchemy is often described as reversal, return, reversion, or turning back.

I shall now explain the Wondrous Scripture of the Heart-Seal of the Supreme Jade Emperor section by section, as follows:

“The superior medicine has three grades: Spirit, Qi, and Essence.”

As for Spirit: it is One—one, and therefore numinous.
As for Qi: it is Two—the two, and therefore
transformation.
As for Essence: it is Three—Spirit and Qi unite and give birth to Essence, and thus there are three.

Since these are called the “superior medicine,” they clearly cannot be postcelestial things, but must without doubt be the precelestial Original Spirit, Original Qi, and Original Essence.

Speaking in distinction, the postcelestial spirit, qi, and essence are: the cognitive spirit, the spirit of thought and deliberation, the qi of breathing, and the essence of sexual in*******se and stimulation.

These are not the same as the precelestial three.

Particularly important is the statement that the sages of all three traditions describe it through the two words center (中) and one (⼀).

These are not abstract metaphysical labels. They are practical indications of its nature.

Center means that it is not off to one side, not biased, not scattered, not leaning toward one pole against another. It is the pivot prior to excess and deviation.

One means that it is undivided, whole, not fragmented into the many operations of the postcelestial mind.

Thus when Daoist texts say that within the center there is the One, and within the One there is the center, they are describing a reality that is at once unified and perfectly balanced.

The original spiritual awareness is centered because it does not lose itself in dispersion, and it is one because it has not yet broken into multiplicity.

08/29/2026

What is meant by “only after stillness can one attain ease (安)” is this: from the purified stillness of body and mind there arises the natural spiritual awareness (神覺, shen-jue).

This natural spiritual awareness has already been mentioned earlier. It is the innately complete and luminous awareness originally possessed by human beings. This nature is the Original Spirit (元神, yuan shen) arising from the ancestral Xing-nature.

Outwardly it appears indistinct and undifferentiated, yet inwardly it is empty and bright. First there is true emptiness, and afterward subtle being (妙有, miao you).

In Buddhism this is called “the true awakening of Buddha-nature” or “the wondrous mind of perfect enlightenment.”

In Confucianism it is called “the Dao-mind of Taiji” or “the mind of Heaven and Earth.”

In Daoism it is called “the spiritually aware Original Spirit” or “the true nature of luminous awareness.”

Stillness is like water so calm that no ripple appears, like a mirror resting in clarity.

The secret instruction says:
When body and mind are pure and still, spirit and Qi unite in harmony; all becomes muddled and undifferentiated, deep and obscure.

One no longer knows Heaven as a canopy above or Earth as a carriage below.
One no longer knows that one has a body, nor that the body contains the Dao.

This is what is meant by “utmost emptiness and profound stillness.”

When practice reaches this stage, one Yang will soon arise.

However, for beginners, moving from stability-settling to stillness usually involves a degree of effort and discipline. To attain the natural state of spiritual awakening is not yet possible. Therefore the phrase “utmost emptiness and profound stillness” is also difficult to achieve fully
