It is with a heavy heart that I share news of the passing of my beloved dance teacher, Miss Helyn. Her impact on my life can not be overstated. She was like a second mother to me, a mentor, an inspiration.
My dream had always been to have a career as a professional dancer, not a teacher. However, when I was 15, I was diagnosed with a congenital defect in my ankles for which there was no cure. The doctor told me to find another career. This coincided with Miss Helyn's decision to close her studio. As you can imagine, both of these events were quite devastating. However, upon hearing my diagnosis and knowing that I was at a loss for how to continue, she simply stated, "well, you will just find some space to rent and open your own studio". So at 16, I did just that and here I am 37 years later.
Although the studio is only one of the many ways that I am able to use dance and the arts to heal, inspire, and transform, without Miss Helyn, I might never have followed that path.
In her 102 years, she led an amazing life (her full obituary will be posted in the Courant on Sunday). I am grateful for every minute I spent with her. The light in her eyes, her sense of humor and sharp wit, her entertaining stories, and the wisdom that poured out of her will stay with me forever. She shaped me as a dancer, teacher, and strong woman. I will continue to carry her amazing spirit with me every time I walk into the studio.
These photos are from after my first LMDC recital in 1985 and with my Mom at Miss Helyn's 101st birthday party in 2019, where she hosted a singalong playing her ukulele!
