Full Expression Fitness

Full Expression Fitness Every living being in this world carries the fundamental impulse to create and express. There is nothing but that very moment, and everything else falls away.

Full Expression Fitness LLC provides online personal training services to athletes and exercisers who want to break through plateaus and achieve their personal goals with grace, confidence, and joy! Though self-expression manifests in different ways – through writing, conversation, art, child-rearing, etc. – expression through movement has always done something special for me. I have always felt m

ost honest, genuine, and joyful in those moments of complete connection to my sport or dance. No other time do I enter the “zone” and flow as easily and completely as when I’m moving with intent and mastery. But as all athletes, dancers, and exercisers know far too well, it really sucks when, despite our best efforts, a movement eludes us. Performance plateaus and injuries legitimately limit our ability to creatively self-express. When we crash the bike, fall off the climb, botch the tumbling pass, or bail before the final summit push for the thousandth time, we may begin to ask painful (and often unfair) personal questions: what is wrong with me? why can't I do this? do I ever have any hope of improving? Attempts to overcome these frustrating situations may cause even more grief. Conventional approaches to athletic improvement typically involve training more, trying harder, and getting stronger. When we do these things with complete commitment and still see no progress, we become hopeless, helpless, and full of excuses. With that said, if trying hard and getting strong does not help us improve, trying harder and getting stronger is probably not going to help, either. Of course there is an appropriate time and place for endurance training, strength building, and all-out effort. However, the gains from these tactics are temporary, and may not serve us in the ways we really need. Instead, we must intelligently turn to other options. I founded Full Expression to connect athletes, dancers, and fitness enthusiasts of all levels with tactics that go beyond the “try hard, get strong” model of training. This training style embraces strategies from a wide range of disciplines in order to help you accomplish health, sport, and wellness goals outside of a traditional gym setting. Instead of hitting the gym to get stronger, we hit the mat to get smarter, more coordinated, balanced, and controlled. Rather than trying our absolute hardest to “make” something happen, we back off and approach the movement with an attitude of ease and grace. We pay close attention to intuition. We stop replaying failed attempts over and over again in our minds; instead we visualize perfect ex*****on and the emotions that accompany success. I promise that the work we do together will not only improve your performance, but also will enhance the playfulness and joy that reeled you into your favorite sport in the first place. Your movement expression will become more free, complex, and masterful. When something isn't working, or causes you pain, we will evaluate the problem with an analytic and holistic approach. I truly want to get you feeling graceful, strong, and capable in your sport and movement pursuits. If you are stuck in a performance plateau, an unshakable negative mindset, a seemingly endless string of injuries, or if you want to break free from conventional training tactics, I’m here to collaborate. See ya on the mat,

-Carly

⭐ CLIENT HYPE ⭐

What can I say - is just so damn cool!

She genuinely embodies what so many adventure athletes strive to imitate: a relaxed, creative, why not-ness and a spirit who equates sport with play. She brings together her collage of interests - which include highlining, climbing, snowboarding, and juggling (to name a few!) - in a way that is both cohesive and natural.

Training together, we've worked on everything from general body awareness to persistent wrist pain to climbing tactics to sessioning on a highline and back again. Superficially, these training topics seem quite disconnected. Yet when Morgan puts theory into practice, everything clicks so obviously into place.

Morgan - thanks for reminding us that above all, we are out here to have some fun :)

How to recover quickly from BIG DAYS 🙌

For so many adventure athletes, summertime spells long distances, hefty elevation gains, and serious objectives.

In order to minimize fatigue and maximize sending, though, RECOVERY must become a priority!

⭐So here's a quick guide to recovering from one big day in preparation for the next:⭐

➡️1. Nourish your body. Aim to consume a surplus of calories for several days before AND after your objective. Aim to get this surplus from simple, whole foods whenever possible. Don't forget to drink lots of water!

➡️2. Reduce training intensity. Presumably, you have been training for this all year – so grant yourself permission to lighten up your training load (or even forego entire training sessions!) during this time. If you feel compelled to maintain a training schedule, focus on movement training and skill-building.

➡️3. Adopt a daily restorative practice.  Meditation, stretching, breathing exercises and self-massage have an incredible way of restoring the body and mind. Plop yourself down on a mat and notice what needs some love and attention! Even five minutes each day can make a big difference in the long run.

➡️4. Prioritize sleep. More than anything else, sleep is key to recovery. Big days often require an early start, so prioritize sleep in the days before/after. This eliminates the pressure to get tons of sleep the night before you head out and still gives you plenty of recovery zzzz's.

Ps. Perfect weather days in the mountains leave me glowing 🥰

Mindset magic 🌠

The mind is the single most powerful training tool we possess. Here are a few ways to mold a training mindset that works like magic:

➡️1. Positively reinforce every training session. 👍

You’ll get the most out of each session if your brain and body are rewarded for making it happen. My favorite way to do this is through simple statements of self-gratitude.

To do this, find one thing about every session to feel grateful for, and then use precise language to express your self-gratitude (e.g., thank your shoulders for feeling stable, or thank your hips for feeling pliable).

It is important to thank your body for the work it did that day, even if your session wasn’t “great” or “productive”. The simple act of showing up to your practice is deeply valuable to your progress and should be explicitly rewarded!

➡️2. Discover something new every day.

When you are curious, attentive, and present in your body, secrets emerge! Make a point to notice how different parts of your body feel and move, and experiment with directing your attention towards seemingly uninvolved or neglected parts of your body.

For example, where do you tend to look during your warm up jog? What happens in your jaw when you lift something heavy? When you interlace your fingers, which hand falls on top?

Reflect on any discoveries with an open mind and self-gratitude. Reframe failure as a legitimate opportunity to learn (and then take the time to find out what the lesson was!).

The more you can treat your training session as a time to grow and learn, the more you will grow and learn while you train! What a wonderful positive feedback loop!

P.s. Tumbling around the sand and sea is exactly the beach vacay I was longing for 🌊

Does caffeine actually improve performance? ☕

The answer to this question is not the same for everyone! 🤔

Athletes already tolerant to caffeine (e.g., coffee and tea drinkers) are most likely to experience (some) performance benefits. But keep in mind that most caffeine studies have focused on men and team sport athletes. The effects of caffeine on women in individual sports, for example, is comparatively understudied.

Furthermore, people who do not regularly consume caffeine are more likely to experience negative side effects that actually impair performance. Some of these side effects include heart palpitations, dehydration, and increased anxiety/nervousness...pretty much everything adventure athletes would best avoid!!

But if you are a regular coffee drinker and wanna do it right, here's the (rough) formula to success:

WHEN: About an hour before exercise.

HOW MUCH: 3mg/kg of body weight maximizes performance benefits while minimizing side effects. (FYI, there's about 70mg of caffeine in a 6oz cup of coffee.)

CAVEATS: Caffeine is very dehydrating! Plan to drink plenty of water on the days you consume caffeine. Additionally, caffeine is a stimulant known to disrupt sleep. Consume your caffeine early in the day!

Ps. I'm not convinced my morning pour over enhances my performance to any noticeable degree, but it sure enhances my mood 🌈

Why adventure athletes plateau (& what to do about it!) 🤔

Performance plateaus are most simply characterized by that feeling of being "stuck". Despite your best efforts, you can't seem to level-up your performance.

But do not despair! With proper identification of the cause of your "stuck-ness" and a little bit of strategy, your performance plateau won't last for long.

⭐Here are 3 Reasons adventure athletes plateau - and importantly - what to do about it!⭐

Reason 1: You need fitness 🏃‍♀️

➡️Signs you need fitness: “doing your sport” is the only exercise you get, other athletes performing at your level are considerably stronger/faster/fitter than you, or your doctor has recommended you lose weight.

➡️What to do about it: build a simple exercise plan with tried-and-true exercises that slowly progress in intensity and load. In addition, consider integrating one or two sport-specific exercises into your routine (e.g., finger training for climbers and martial artists).

Reason 2: You need better movement 🤸‍♀️

➡️Signs you need better movement: you are frequently injured, have “bad posture,” or sometimes have trouble getting your body to do what your mind tells it to.

➡️What to do about it: begin with simple tests to determine your baseline awareness. Eventually these can be progressed into balance challenges like standing leg swings with the eyes closed and dynamic coordination drills.

Reason 3: You need a mindset makeover 🧠

➡️Signs you need a mindset makeover: fear replaces focus during the most critical moments of ex*****on, or you know you are physically and technically capable of executing but can’t bring yourself to actually do it

➡️What to do about it: aim to practice your desired mental state with consistency and intention. Practice positive self-talk and acceptance, imagine the feeling of success, and cultivate confidence and resilience in controlled settings.

Happy training!

When collaboration & competition harmonize 🎶

There's something about the American psyche that loves to categorically divide the sporting world: Are you on my team? Or are you my rival?

This with me/against me attitude is refreshingly muddled when it comes to adventure sports. I think many of us would agree that collaboration & competition are not mutually exclusive!

For me, bouldering provides the perfect setting to play with collaboration & competition. I've found that the best sessions with friends most often emerge from a blend of shared problem-solving and pseudo-competition.

One of my favorite examples of this interplay is the classic "send train" phenomenon. Imagine: everyone in the group has been working a boulder problem for the past hour, but nobody has managed to put it all together. Then, in a sudden stroke of insight (and maybe some luck!), someone finally tops it out!

For those of you who boulder, you know what happens next: the next person to try the boulder sends it, too! And so does the next person! At last, the good ol' send train has left the station. Collaboration and competition in perfect harmony. 🎵 😎

Ps. I have this habit of being annoyingly collaborative - here I am, caught in the act of sussing out every last detail by my road trippin' friend Mike on a Bike

The easiest way to improve sport performance ❄

This week, I've got a short & sweet tip that's guaranteed to help you improve your running, riding, climbing, fighting, dancing, and whatever else you might be vibing.

It's quite easy, really: If you want to get better at what you do, go play with people better than you!

In doing so, you are exposed to a wider variety of tricks, maneuvers, and terrain. When you simply watch someone perform at a higher level, you begin to see what's possible for you, too.

What's more, you are more likely to attempt things you had previously considered above your ability. With a bit of encouragement and inspiration, you might find yourself attempting stuff you had believed was impossible.

Quite often, things turn out better than expected: it's not unusual to find yourself leveling up repeatedly during a day out with more experienced athletes!

Turns out, most people are quite willing to laugh with you as you tumble down the mountain (and give you pointers for next time).

The best people to learn from are the ones who encourage you to make mistakes when it's safe to do so, and support & advise you during the times when it’s not.

So dare to suck a little bit and learn a lot with your shredder friends - and have fun out there!

Ps. We are finally getting some snow out here, which means it's time for me to flop down our local ski hill. This post was inspired by true life events, y'all.
