Proper rock placement around a pond requires deliberate engineering. Every stone is carefully mapped to serve a purpose. Larger shaped rocks conceal pumps, skimmers and mechanicals. Flat-surfaced stones are leveled and placed at precise angles to create stable spaces for sunning, reading by the water and practicing those important yoga moves.

Sand-bottom natural ponds look bright because the pale floor reflects sunlight up through the water. A robust filtration system keeps the sand free of debris so the water says clean, clear and healthy. This clear water unlocks the sand floor's potential, creating a bright backdrop that maximizes surface reflections.

Versatile Northern Blue Flag Iris
By Kelly Billing, Guest Contributor

The Northern Blue Flag Iris (Iris versicolor) suits water gardens of nearly any size. The plant has sword-shaped leaves and delicate, lavender-purple flowers in spring. Flower color varies depending on the source.

It has a more compact growth habit coompared to other cultivars like Southern Blue Flag Iris (Iris virginica) and Louisiana iris cultivars, all of which are native to the United States. In addition to being a true aquatic plant, it performs well in moist soil, making it suitable for rain and bog gardens as well as ponds.

Blue Flag blooms best in full sun and performs well in light shade. In natural ponds, it grows both in and out of the water, crowding out the germination of unwanted plants like cattails and other weeds. In small ponds or decorative containers, they don't mind the restriction of pots.

Deer find the plant offensive due to its bitter taste and mild toxins in the rhizomes and foliage, which adds to the plant's durability.
