Blue Jays Punch Ticket to Championship Series in Game 5 Thriller

ANTREVILLE, S.C. — The Carolina Blue Jays are headed back to the Palmetto Baseball Association Championship Series.

In a winner-take-all Game 5 of the PBA playoff semifinals, the Blue Jays defeated the Greenville Pioneers in a tightly contested battle in Antreville, South Carolina, ending Greenville’s season and sending Carolina back to the championship round for the fifth time in six seasons.

The victory also sets up a rematch of the 2023 PBA Championship Series, as the Blue Jays will face the Carolina Padres for the league championship.

Blue Jays Strike First

The Pioneers threatened early in the opening inning, putting runners on the corners and applying pressure immediately. But the Blue Jays escaped the jam without allowing a run.

Carolina then answered in the bottom of the first.

Josiah Sullivan delivered an RBI single, bringing home the game’s first run and giving the Blue Jays an early 1-0 advantage.

Carolina added another run in the third inning to extend its lead.

Boone vs. Quezada

The pitching matchup featured Brian Boone of the Carolina Blue Jays against Olmedo Quezada of the Greenville Pioneers.

It was not the pitching matchup many expected heading into the decisive Game 5, but both pitchers helped produce the kind of tight, competitive game that a winner-take-all semifinal demanded.

The Pioneers continued to create opportunities throughout the game, but Greenville couldn’t consistently convert those chances into runs. The game remained within striking distance deep into the contest.

Costly Seventh-Inning Error Changes the Game

The turning point came in the bottom of the seventh.

With the Pioneers trying to keep their season alive, a costly Greenville error opened the door for Carolina. The Blue Jays capitalized, scoring two runs on the error and creating separation at a critical moment.

Carolina continued to take advantage of the opportunity, and Matt Craig came through with an RBI single later in the inning.

What had been a tight game suddenly tilted heavily toward the Blue Jays.

The Pioneers had opportunities throughout the contest, but the Blue Jays made the biggest plays when it mattered most.

Pioneers’ Season Comes to an End

With the loss, the Greenville Pioneers finish the 2026 season No. 3 in the Palmetto Baseball Association.

It was nevertheless a strong and much-improved season for the Pioneers. Greenville entered the postseason with plenty of star power and showed significant growth throughout the year. But the Pioneers ultimately fell one series short of another championship appearance.

They will now watch the championship series from home after coming up short in a hard-fought semifinal battle.

Blue Jays Back in the Finals

For Carolina, the win represents another trip to the biggest stage.

The Blue Jays advance to the PBA Championship Series for the fifth time in six seasons, where they’ll meet the Carolina Padres.

Carolina is also chasing history.

After winning the championship in 2025, the Blue Jays are attempting to defend their title and win back-to-back championships for the first time in franchise history.

The Padres will stand in their way.

Championship Series Set

The PBA Championship Series was originally scheduled to begin on September 20, but the series has been moved to October 4.

Game 1 and Game 2 will be played on October 4, with the Carolina Blue Jays taking on the Carolina Padres.

The Blue Jays now have one goal: finish what they started in 2025 and repeat as Palmetto Baseball Association champions.

The Padres, meanwhile, will look to end Carolina’s championship reign and claim the PBA crown for themselves.

POWER VS. PITCHING: GREENVILLE PIONEERS AND CAROLINA BLUE JAYS SET FOR WINNER-TAKE-ALL GAME 5

One game. One winner. One championship berth.

The stage is set for a dramatic Game 5 semifinal in the Palmetto Baseball Association, as the Greenville Pioneers travel to Antreville, South Carolina, to take on the Carolina Blue Jays on September 13, at 3:05pm with a trip to the Championship Series on the line.

This matchup features two teams with very different strengths.

Greenville enters the decisive game with one of the most dangerous offenses in the league, batting a remarkable .351 as a team. The Pioneers have produced three home runs, six triples and 19 doubles while striking out 91 times.

Carolina, meanwhile, brings the stronger pitching staff into the winner-take-all contest. The Blue Jays’ staff has posted a 2.69 ERA, with 111 strikeouts and a 1.54 WHIP.

PITCHING COULD DECIDE EVERYTHING

If Carolina turns to Brian Boone, the Blue Jays would be putting the ball in the hands of one of their most effective starters.

Boone has started four games and owns a 2–2 record with a 1.20 ERA in 30 innings, striking out 28 batters. Boone tops out around 83 mph, but his great control and ability to locate his pitches make him a difficult pitcher to face. He does not have overpowering velocity, but he can keep hitters off balance by throwing strikes and working the corners of the plate.

But Carolina also has another major weapon in Nate Lamb.

Lamb has started five games and has struck out an impressive 47 batters in only 27 innings. His ability to miss bats could be especially important against a Greenville lineup that has hit .351 this season.

Unlike Boone, Lamb throws in the low 90s, giving him a significant velocity advantage. His combination of low-90s heat and outstanding strikeout ability could allow him to challenge Greenville’s hitters aggressively. If Lamb is locating his fastball and keeping his secondary pitches in the strike zone, he could be one of the toughest pitchers for the Pioneers to handle.

GREENVILLE HAS ITS OWN ANSWERS

The Pioneers are expected to consider Kevin Solano and Quezada Olmedo.

Solano doesn’t overpower hitters with velocity, but his ability to locate his pitches, change speeds and use his split-finger effectively has made him extremely difficult to hit.

Most importantly, Solano has already demonstrated that he can handle Carolina’s lineup, having thrown a complete-game shutout against the Blue Jays in the semifinals.

Olmedo provides a completely different look.

The power pitcher can reach approximately 96 mph, giving Greenville an intimidating option against Carolina’s lineup. The question will be command. If Olmedo is throwing strikes, his velocity could make him extremely difficult to handle.

TWO POSSIBLE PITCHING MATCHUPS

If the game becomes Brian Boone vs. Kevin Solano, the matchup favors Greenville slightly.

Projected odds: Greenville 58% — Carolina 42%.

Boone’s great control could limit Greenville’s opportunities, but Solano’s previous success against Carolina and Greenville’s superior offense give the Pioneers a narrow advantage.

If Carolina instead goes with Nate Lamb and Greenville counters with Quezada Olmedo, the matchup becomes almost a coin flip.

Projected odds: Greenville 52% — Carolina 48%.

The Lamb-Olmedo matchup could be especially intriguing because both pitchers bring high-level weapons, but in completely different ways. Lamb’s low-90s velocity and strikeout ability could neutralize Greenville’s powerful offense, while Olmedo’s velocity could overwhelm Carolina if he commands the strike zone.

THE BOTTOM LINE

There is no runaway favorite in Game 5.

Greenville has the overwhelming offensive advantage. Carolina has the pitching advantage. Boone brings great control and deception, while Lamb brings low-90s velocity and a powerful strikeout arsenal. And with a championship-series berth at stake, every pitch, every baserunner and every defensive play could become the difference.

My current prediction:

GREENVILLE PIONEERS — 52–58% FAVORITE, depending on the starting pitchers.

CAROLINA BLUE JAYS — 42–48%.

One thing is certain: by the end of Game 5, one team will be celebrating a trip to the Palmetto Baseball Association Championship Series, while the other team’s season will come to an end.

Power vs. pitching. Offense vs. strikeouts. Greenville vs. Carolina.

Game 5 has all the ingredients of a classic.

Carolina Padres Survive Mariners’ Late-Season Push, Advance to Eighth Championship Series in Nine Years

JONESVILLE, S.C. — The Carolina Padres entered Sunday’s Palmetto Baseball Association semifinal matchup with an opportunity to close out the series and punch their ticket to another championship appearance.

Standing in their way was an expansion team that had already proven it was not going away quietly.

The Spartanburg Mariners, facing elimination, battled the Padres at the USC Union College baseball field in Jonesville, South Carolina, and delivered one of their biggest performances of the season. The Mariners fought off several opportunities by the Padres and forced a Game 4 after defeating Carolina 5-3 in Game 3.

Game 3: Mariners Force a Game 4

With their season on the line, the Mariners came out aggressive.

Spartanburg jumped on the Padres early, scoring two runs in the first inning to take a 2-0 advantage. The Mariners added another run in the bottom of the third, putting Carolina in an early hole.

But the Padres refused to go away.

Carolina battled back with three runs in the sixth inning, tying the game at 3-3 and putting the pressure right back on the Mariners.

The Padres had multiple opportunities to take control of the game and potentially end the series, but Spartanburg continued to fight.

The Mariners answered with two runs in the seventh inning, reclaiming the lead at 5-3. From there, Spartanburg’s pitching and defense held the Padres in check over the final two innings.

The Mariners closed out Game 3 with a 5-3 victory, extending the series and forcing a decisive Game 4.

For an expansion club, it was another statement moment in what had already been an impressive playoff run.

Game 4: Padres Finally Close It Out

With their backs against the wall, the Padres returned to the field looking to avoid a fifth game and finish the series.

Carolina wasted little time getting started.

The Padres jumped out to a 3-0 lead, putting the Mariners under pressure once again. Spartanburg responded in the third inning, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

The Padres, however, continued to apply pressure offensively.

Carolina erupted for three more runs in the fifth inning, extending its advantage. The Mariners answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning, but the Padres’ offense continued to produce.

Carolina added two more runs in the sixth inning, putting the game firmly in its control.

The Padres finished the matchup with 17 hits, providing more than enough offensive firepower to finally put away a resilient Mariners club.

Spartanburg continued to battle until the final outs, but Carolina ultimately closed out the game and the semifinal series.

Mariners Finish Strong

Although the Mariners’ season came to an end, their playoff run was one to remember.

The expansion club finished the regular season 8-12, but saved some of its best baseball for the postseason. Spartanburg fought its way through the playoffs and pushed the heavily favored Padres to the brink, forcing Carolina to win the series in four games.

For an expansion team, the Mariners showed plenty of fight, resilience and promise for the future.

Padres Head Back to the Championship

With the series victory, the Carolina Padres advance to the PBA Championship Series for the eighth time in nine years.

The Padres will now wait for the winner of the other semifinal matchup between the Carolina Blue Jays and Greenville Pioneers.

The championship matchup is scheduled to begin September 20 at Shoeless Joe Jackson Park, with additional championship games scheduled as the series continues.

The Padres have punched their ticket.

Now they wait to find out who will stand across from them.

The road to the PBA championship continues.

PBA PLAYOFFS: PIONEERS AND BLUE JAYS SET FOR WINNER-TAKE-ALL SHOWDOWN

GREENVILLE, S.C. — The Palmetto Baseball Association playoffs delivered another thrilling chapter this weekend as the Carolina Blue Jays traveled to Northwest Sargent Ballpark to take on the Greenville Pioneers in a highly anticipated semifinal matchup.

With the best-of-five series tied at 1-1 entering the weekend, both teams were looking to take control of the series and put themselves one win away from the PBA Finals.

Game 3: Pioneers Take Control

Game 3 was a classic pitching duel from start to finish.

The Greenville Pioneers jumped on the scoreboard in the first inning, putting up two runs to take an early 2-0 lead. From there, the game turned into a battle between two outstanding pitching staffs.
