- That Final Post -
At the beginning of our summer season, I announced my decision to no longer coach summer ball in the coming season. There were many factors that went into what was a hard decision but ultimately after the journey we have had and how fortunate I have been in travel softball to be blessed with the kids and families I have had it just felt like the right time. We have been really fortunate to have little turnover, amazing families, and great organization support from Miami Valley Xpress and the Miami Valley Sports Foundation. If you know me at all or have been around the team you know I absolutely love these players and coaches, and they love each other. It was not an easy decision when I made it, and has not gotten easier this week as we approached the end of what has been an incredible piece of our lives well worth putting all the time an effort we did into it. I will never forget the emotions of our last night on the field.
While this was tough, I am confident for those that go on in softball are going to do great. It is true…we won a lot, we lost as well, have plastic trophies, fancy rings, a lot of first HR balls, drawers full of red, white, and blue uniforms but not of those things really matter. I am 100% confident the time we spent together, the memories made, and the relationships between our families and players was the point, the purpose, and is what matters the most. I have so many incredible stories of friendship and support in our ball family. Our team is full of families that have truly supported us and one another. Thank you all, parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts…all of you. Your support and the time and energy you put into being there means so much.
I won’t miss the summer sun beating down, dirt everywhere, blazing turf, and especially not some of the showcase tournaments. I am going to miss practice, players sharing what is going on in their lives, and being picked on by players for everything you could imagine. I have also learned coaching teenage girls, and this is one to remember coaches: Sarcasm is a love language. I can’t believe I am going to say this, but I will actually soon be missing those eye rolls. I will miss the laughter, watching so many of these amazing young women grow up before our eyes. If you were here for 1 year, or 8, I hope you know you got our all, and we are always pulling for your success on the field and in life.
I also want to thank the incredible coaches that I have had with me in this Journey. I have had the opportunity to do this with best friends from the past, make new best friends for the future, and all because of softball. I got to see coaches graduate from college, start careers, grow their own businesses, get married, and have their first children. I always tell my players we might not be making the next pro, but we are likely making the next coach. I believe that and believe they will be amazing at it when the time comes. It has been incredible to see all the life that has bloomed around our team. It was so great celebrating those moments with you, and I will never forget it. Thanks – Josh Parrett, Amanda Hartings, Hannah Brown, Gabby Hougan, Maddy Twymon, and Amy Anyanwu. You all left a mark on me and the team over the years. Thanks for sticking by me in the Wins, and the Loses, our best days, and our worst. It is because of you that we sustained our success and formed the team bond we did. You have all taught me things I will never forget, and it was a pleasure doing this with you. I have so much respect and appreciation for you all.
It would be crazy for me not to thank two other people. The person who pulled me into Xpress and has taught me so much about softball, coaching women, and what it means to coach, leading with love for your players first. Alexis Harvey. Coaching-wise, I found a kindred spirit there, and while we never had a team together, it often felt like our teams were one. She has been my softball rock, or my softball wife, as my wife says. The other is my wife. Thank you, Lindsay Coffey for all your sacrifices and letting me fill so much of our lives with ball. When I started doing this at 22 I had no idea you would share me with this passion so much, and for so long. I can’t thank you enough for letting me.
This has been an incredible experience, and I am grateful for you all letting me be a part of your journey here with Miami Valley Xpress 08. This is our end, but for all our players just the beginning of the incredible lives they have ahead of them. We wish you all nothing but the best.
Thank you – Rod, Rodney, Rod-dog, Coach Coffey, Coach
