All-State selections! Congratulations to catcher Matt Ritter, left, and Trenton Green, right, for being named to the New York State All-State team for Class B!
The two won three straight Section V titles for the Lions.
Both student-athletes will continue their career for coach Mike Armstrong at Alfred State College in the fall.
Matt made fourth team as a catcher, the fourth catcher selected. Ethan Loop from Wayland-Cohocton made first team. Other catchers were from Chester, Hannibal and Ogdensburg. Not only was Ritter selected for his outstanding defensive catching abilities and hitting, but his third role as a closer.
Trenton made sixth team in the competitive shortstop-pitcher category. Green not only dazzled at shortstop with incredible range, he was like Rickey Henderson, stealing bases and hitting home runs from the lead off spot. Green entered the post season with one victory on the mound and won all three sectional games.
“Thank you to John Moriello from the New York Sportswriters Association for putting this together, we went a few years without enough volunteers. And Bill Collmer, a champion for athletes from all schools, really worked hard to get Southern Tier athletes recognized for their accomplishments,” said Wellsville coach John Anderson. “These awards are the pinnacle, but to win them with a sectional title is extra special. You have to sacrifice individual awards sometimes to be a team-first athlete to win games and they did that. They are the first two to say ‘we did it’ and that will be part of their legacy at Wellsville.”
