For size comparison that saw is over 40” from hilt to tip.

As of 5/18 there is at least one portage between Silver Creek and Lincoln, that Jake and I are hoping to clear by the weekend. Over 30miles of river are passable but still a bit more technical in some spots, than the Pine River has been in the past few years.

The big white pine portage above Peterson Bridge is cleared out. More river clean up will be ongoing.

This is my 20th season working on the Pine. When I first started, I was told if I had any questions to "just ask Andrew." My first time cutting the river was with Drew and I slipped off a log in the first 20 minutes on a cold April morning, with 12hrs of clearing to go.
Huge shout-out to the Miltners and Shanklands for teaching me and so many others a strong work ethic and a deep love for this river. Maybe in another 20 years I can be like you guys. 😂

River Update: Lincoln-Low Bridge is navigable, with the exception of one portage between Highschool and Peterson bridges, due to a very large white pine. The Forest Service assisted with the large Jam down from the Sand Hill. It is still relatively dangerous and will need more work, but can be passed by skilled paddlers.

Ope Pine River Paddlesports Center caught a video of me.
We're out at it again in the morning (5/8) for Lincoln-Dobson. Between nine saws we swapped parts to get 4 running semi properly.
Six carb swaps, two bars, one oiler, one drive bearing, two clutches, and the biggest takeaway is that 25 year old Husqvarnas work better than the new ones 😂

Clearing progress is being made. Peterson-Low bridge still needs a few more days of work but is open with the Forest Service still recommending extreme caution. 10 portages cleared and hundreds of other dangerous areas trimmed. We still strongly encourage portaging around the large Jam that is two bends down from the Big Sand Hill, there is a small channel cleared but very large trees with root balls coming up from the river bed make it a dangerous passage.
We are going out again for Dobson - Peterson next and have reports of at least 10 portages in that section.

‼🛶DANGEROUS LOGJAM ON PINE RIVER🛶‼

The Huron-Manistee National Forests is strongly cautioning anglers and paddlers to consider not navigating the waters of the Pine River this weekend.

A massive logjam between Peterson's Bridge and Low Bridge River Accesses has made navigation dangerous in the swift moving waters.

Logjams were also reported at Dobson Bridge upstream from Peterson's Bridge.

Logjams also pose additional risks to river recreation users.

📢Water passing through logjams traps solid objects, posing higher drowning risks for kayakers and canoers.
📢Redirect water flow, often causing intense erosion on stream banks, which can lead to unstable banks.
📢Accumulated debris can block bridges and culverts, triggering severe flooding, forcing water onto roads sometimes causing them to fail.
📢Portage can become difficult or impossible.
📢Flow of water can be at a higher velocity.
📢Potential to have watercraft puncture by submersed debris.
📢Surfaces with heavy silt or sand can be water saturated and react like quicksand.

Play it safe on the opening day of Trout Season 2026. Make that tale about the one that got away the most eventful story of opening day.

Conditions on Northern Lower Michigan’s rivers were impacted by recent historical rainfall and subsequent flooding

With the start of Trout season on Saturday April 25, 2026, the Huron-Manistee National Forests would like to remind all anglers to wade and boat safely.

Post-flooded waters require extra caution due to strong currents, submerged debris and unstable banks. Docks that have washed downstream and log jams may present new navigation hazards.

Play it safe by fishing with a partner, wearing a Personal Flotation Device (PFD), carrying a wading stick and maintaining vigilance for submerged hazards.

Update from the Pine River, Hoxeyville Michigan. 4/17/26

Because of continued high water levels and many of dangerous new log jams from the recent flooding, we’re strongly urging everyone to stay off the river right now.
Please consider the Pine River closed for all recreational paddling and use until crews can finish the necessary safety assessments and clear out those hazards.

We will update as we clear sections of the river starting from the lower portions and working up. Cleanup efforts will take several weeks once once the water volume has returned to a safe level.
