So….. here you have it!
FB-Meta had a link to this and I clicked on it. This is what it told me. It’s pretty correct, except for the length of the trail which is 65 miles now.
Check it out……
Pine Creek Rail Trail e-bike rules for 2026 — here’s what’s current:
The 2026 rule: Pedal-assist only
Pennsylvania DCNR confirmed that e-bikes are allowed on the Pine Creek Rail Trail, but with limits:
1. Pedal-assist only - You must be pedaling to move. Throttle-only use is not allowed on this non-motorized trail.
2. Class I specs - Bikes must be ≤750 watts, ≤100 lbs, ≤20 mph motor-assisted, and have working pedals.
3. Where it applies - The 62-mile Pine Creek Rail Trail is classified as non-motorized, so these DCNR e-bike rules apply the full length from Wellsboro Junction to Jersey Shore.
• 2026 Trail of the Year: DCNR named Pine Creek Rail Trail PA’s 2026 Trail of the Year. With 44,000+ annual riders, the spotlight + new Wellsboro link that means more traffic.
• Safety vs access debate: Trail groups like the Regional Trail Corporation now explicitly ban throttle-only e-bikes to “maintain safety”. Riders online are split — some say pedal-assist is needed for accessibility, others worry about younger riders going too fast.
What this means if you ride
• Allowed: Class I/II e-bikes where the motor helps while you pedal. However the throttle on the bike can not be used.
• Not allowed: Class II/III bikes with throttles that move the bike without pedaling, motorized skateboards/scooters.
Statewide crackdown on throttle e-bikes:
DCNR clarified that throttle-only isn't allowed on non-motorized trails, which includes Pine Creek.
Quick tips for riding Pine Creek on an e-bike
• Stick to pedal-assist mode — don't use throttle even if your bike has one
• Keep it slow and yield to horses, hikers, and wagons
• Watch for the new Wellsboro access if you want to grab food or check out town
PA doesn't use the Class 1/2/3 system - it just calls them "pedalcycles with electric assist".
Entorcement has been a hot topic, with some riders worried about fast throttle bikes on trails, but the official rule is pedal-assist only.
Heading out there soon? The 62-mile run through the Grand Canyon of PA is pretty epic, especially with the new Wellsboro connection making it easier to break up the ride.
DCNR and local shops stress announcing passes, stopping at signs, and being courteous. The vibe: “E-bike + respect = no problems”.
So there it is. Have fun. But take it slow on that e-bike. They are great assist. Oh…. And wear your helmet!
(A friend just had a wreck- no helmet! The good news is that he’s alive. The bad news is his head and jaw injuries. ) Crap happens! Even when you think it won’t.
