𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿!

There’s a moment in leadership that doesn’t get talked about enough.

The moment after someone asks you a difficult question.

Before you answer.

You can feel the room.
You can feel the expectation.
And sometimes, you can feel yourself deciding whether your answer will be honest or simply acceptable.

I’ve learned that some of the most important leadership decisions happen in those few seconds.

Not because you need to have the perfect response. But because those seconds give you a choice:

Will you say what you really think, or what you think the room wants to hear?

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗜 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻’𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗱. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆’𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲.

Clear enough to choose their words.

And confident enough to stand behind them.

𝗔 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲.

She can ask difficult questions.
Challenge the room.
Disagree with the person above her.
Set a boundary.
Want the promotion.

𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿.

Somewhere along the way, many women learned to confuse being liked with being effective.

But leadership isn't about being universally comfortable to everyone around you.

It's about judgment.
Courage.
Clarity.
And the ability to move important things forward.

So if you've been wondering whether you're “𝙩𝙤𝙤 𝙙𝙞𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙩,” “𝙩𝙤𝙤 𝙖𝙢𝙗𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙪𝙨,”or “𝙩𝙤𝙤 𝙢𝙪𝙘𝙝”...

Maybe the better question is:

What happens when leadership purpose meets the conversations women need to have?

I had the pleasure of sharing a meaningful conversation with Robin L. Owens, PhD on the 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗣𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗗𝗿. 𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗻 𝗽𝗼𝗱𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁.

Your next level may not require a new version of you. It may require more of the real one.

I’ve watched incredibly capable women spend years trying to decode what leadership is “supposed” to look like.

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘀𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀.
𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱-𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗰𝘁𝘀.
𝗦𝗮𝘆 𝘆𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘀𝗮𝘆 𝗻𝗼.

And sometimes, they become so focused on being the right kind of leader that they lose sight of their own leadership voice.

Here’s what I’ve learned:

𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗯𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗲𝗹𝘀𝗲.

𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗷𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿.

Sometimes the most important leadership conversations are the ones we were taught not to have.

For years, women have been told to work harder, prove themselves, stay composed, and keep personal matters separate from professional life.

𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝘃𝗮𝗰𝘂𝘂𝗺.

Our experiences shape how we show up, how we perform, and how much energy we have available to lead.

A woman recently said to me, “𝘐’𝘮 𝘸𝘢𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘭 𝘐 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘧𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘣𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘐 𝘨𝘰 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘦.”

I asked her, “𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙛 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙛𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙞𝙨𝙣’𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙧𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩? 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙛 𝙞𝙩’𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙪𝙡𝙩?”

That question stayed with me.

So many women are standing one step away from the opportunity they want, holding an invisible permission slip and waiting for someone else to sign it.

Here is what I want you to know today:

You do not need permission to apply.
You do not need permission to speak up.
You do not need permission to lead.
You do not need permission to take up space.

The women who change organizations, communities, and industries are rarely the ones who feel perfectly ready. They are the ones who decide their voice matters before certainty arrives.

One question I ask many high-achieving women is this:

“𝘞𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘤𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘪𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘥𝘰𝘯𝘦?”

The room usually gets very quiet.

So many accomplished women move from one achievement to the next without pausing long enough to recognize their growth. They lead teams, support families, solve problems, and carry extraordinary responsibility—yet they hesitate to acknowledge their own success.

I still remember the meeting.

I had prepared thoroughly, presented clearly, and answered every question. When it ended, a colleague pulled me aside and said, “𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘮𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘰𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘥𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘢 𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦.”

𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗺𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆.
𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗺𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀.
𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲.

𝗠𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆.

For a long time, I thought comments like that were simply part of leadership. Then I started hearing the same story from women across industries and executive levels. Different words, same message: be less.

That realization became one of the moments that shaped my TEDx Talk.

So many accomplished women are still operating as if someone else needs to approve their ambition before it becomes legitimate.

Here is the truth: 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥 𝙙𝙤𝙚𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙗𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙫𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙙 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙛𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙜𝙣𝙞𝙯𝙚 𝙞𝙩. 𝙄𝙩 𝙗𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙨 𝙫𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙥 𝙝𝙞𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙩.
