While air temperatures can rise quickly, soil temperatures change much more slowly. Even if the air is reading above 32°F, the ground beneath our greens may still be frozen due to:
• Overnight low temperatures
• Limited sunlight or shaded areas
• Moisture within the soil that freezes and thaws slowly

This means conditions can appear playable while the turf’s root zone remains frozen.

When the surface thaws before the soil underneath, the top layer of turf becomes flexible while the lower layer remains frozen. Walking on greens in this state causes root shear, where the upper turf shifts but the frozen layer does not, resulting in root damage that is often invisible at the time.
This injury can weaken turf health and affect putting surfaces well into spring.

That’s why frost and freeze delays are necessary during winter. They protect the health of the turf and help keep our greens smooth for the season ahead.

But hey… protecting the greens now might actually help your putting later.
(No promises — but we’ll take every advantage we can get, right?)

Check out this video from the USGA for more information.

Thanks for your patience and for helping keep the greens healthy!

A mild winter day can be a great chance to play golf, but there is a risk of serious course damage if the surface thaws and soil is frozen below. Learn more about the risk of root shear.
